UCR University Extension’s Short-Term Experiential Programs offer international students immersive academic experiences during summer and winter breaks. These intensive programs combine classroom learning, hands-on projects, and industry engagement—allowing students to gain practical skills, global perspective, and U.S. academic experience while exploring Southern California.

Bioengineering

Explore the world of Bioengineering in this hands-on, 3-week intensive program. You'll delve into cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetic engineering, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical lab skills. Perfect for advancing your scientific expertise or pursuing a career in bioengineering, this program equips you to make an impact in this rapidly evolving field.

Sustainable Transportation

Explore sustainable transportation and learn to create a tech-based startup that benefits the environment. Study the movement of people and goods, using modern tools to assess industry impacts on communities. Through local business visits, including Smart Traffic Management and the California Air Resource Board, you'll gain practical insights to develop and implement intelligent transportation strategies in your area.

Entrepreneurial Leadership and Innovation

Build a strong foundation in entrepreneurship while focusing on marketing, strategic management, and U.S. business practices. Visit three diverse companies—Costco, Euryale Brewery, and Regional Finance—to gain real-world insights and experience.

Artificial Intelligence and Innovation

Unlock your future with AI and Innovation! In this fast-paced, intensive program, you’ll explore key AI tools and techniques, from data preparation to advanced methods like Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). Gain hands-on experience through practical exercises and a final capstone project, equipping you with the skills to build and deploy AI models like a master.

Program Dates: July 27 – August 7, 2026
Modality: In-Person
Program Fee per Student: $1,950

Critical Thinking and Academic English

Enhance your critical thinking and communication with our Academic English program. Develop analytical skills, refine your ability to think critically, and improve your academic writing and speaking. Through strategic planning, group discussions, and practical exercises, you'll gain the confidence to present well-reasoned solutions and excel academically.

Modality: Online
Program Fee per Student: $325

Short-Term Culture and Language (CAL)

Short-Term Culture and Language (CAL) Offered once a year as a 2-week, 4-week, or 6-week module, this short-term offering allows you to practice important language skills including listening, speaking, reading, grammar, and writing, to help you quickly improve your English for university admission, career attainment, and greater intercultural awareness.

Certificates & Recognition

Participants may earn:

  • Certificate of Completion
  • Digital Badge
  • Academic Evaluation for Credit (where applicable)

These outcomes support academic enrichment, portfolio development, and institutional recognition.

Admissions Requirements

For in-person programs:

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months beyond program end date)
  • English proficiency recommended (no test required)
  • U.S. Visitor Visa (B1/B2) or Visa Waiver eligibility
  • UCR Extension provides an official invitation letter to support visa applications and U.S. entry.

Housing & Dining (Optional)

On-campus housing may be available at Lothian Residence Hall, with buffet-style meals at the Glasgow Dining Hall.
