For 2021-2022, students recognized Ingram with the Shulman Endowed Excellence in Teaching Award for overall effectiveness of teaching, including invoking curiosity and creating an academic environment that is open and encouraging.

Ingram says that central to his instructional philosophy is challenging the traditional notion of “right answers” and cultivating an appreciation for the complexity of social and psychological phenomena.

“I believe that while we may not have all the answers, there are certain things we do know, and it is important to develop sensitivity to different levels of certainty,” he says. “I aim to engage students in critical thinking and encourage them to question assumptions by presenting them with contradictory research findings and theories.”

Outside the classroom, Ingram will lead the UCR Business Brazil Leadership Experience, a three-week study trip covering two leadership courses encouraging students to “engage in a deeper understanding of human behavior in organizations,” working on the “idea that behavior is a function of a person in his/her environment.” Which means the way “we behave is largely dependent on who we are and the various contexts we find ourselves in,” according to the program description. Students will study leadership and international management with academics and practitioners in Brazil, in addition to interaction with business leaders with an emphasis on sustainable leadership.

In spring 2024, Ingram also served as coach for the UCR team representing the UCR School of Business at the Collegiate Leadership Competition, which saw 200 teams from the U.S. and Canada compete in two contests: the U.S. Invitational at John Caroll University in Ohio, where the UCR team placed fourth overall, and the online Global Challenge with UCR placing fifth overall, an impressive showing for the inaugural School of Business team participating in the competition.

During the 10 weeks of competition preparation, including weekly coaching sessions, “I watched a transformation that went beyond skill enhancement. It was a profound evolution perspective and unity,” says Ingram. “As our team prepared for the competition, they learned to see their vulnerabilities not as weaknesses but as invaluable strengths. This shift turned each session into a steppingstone, building trust and resilience.”

This dedication to helping students learn both about the subject at hand and about themselves is the hallmark of Ingram’s teaching, coaching, and mentorship.

“Professor Ingram shows great care for his students and has always made himself available for any questions,” wrote another nominating student. “He was the first professor to encourage me to step out of my comfort zone, and I’m glad he did.”

Tags

FACULTY AWARDS

faculty spotlight

Thu, 07 Mar 2024 18:21:09 +0000 ilseu 2446 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu Sharing Up-to-the-minute Knowledge Students Need https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/blog/2024/03/12/giving-students-knowledge Sharing Up-to-the-minute Knowledge Students Need ilseu Thu, 03/07/2024 - 10:12 More Blog Posts <picture> </picture> Laurie McLaughlin March 12, 2024
Every year, Associate Professor of Marketing Ashish Sood shakes up about 20% of his curriculum.

“Why? Well, the marketing world doesn’t stand still, and neither should we,” says Sood. “I bring in the latest industry buzz and academic insights to keep my classes fresh and relevant. It’s all about giving my students the up-to-the-minute knowledge they need.”

This steadfast commitment to staying ahead of the industry is popular among his students, and they awarded him the 2022-2023 Golden Apple Award in two categories: one for graduate core courses and another for graduate elective courses.

In nominating Sood for the awards, various graduate students commented: “Dr. Sood is accessible and really cares about his students.” “He is a helpful professor with a passion for teaching and for job referrals.” “Wonderful learning experience.”

Another student commented, “He is a marketing guru and brings a lot of great insight and hands-on activities,” which reflects Sood’s teaching style.

Sood classes are not your typical sit-and-listen lectures: “We start with an hour of lecture, sure, but the rest of our three-hour session is all about getting your hands dirty with practical stuff,” says Sood, and his students don’t just learn the concepts; they live them.

The professor also brings in three to four guest speakers each quarter. “Many are former students who are out there making waves in different industries,” he says. “They share their real-world experiences, giving us a peek into how things work outside our classroom walls.”

This mix of fresh curriculum, interactive sessions, and insights from the field ensures MBA students get an education that’s not just about books and theories but about the real, ever-evolving world of marketing.

Professor Ashish Sood teaching MGT 209-001 in Anderson Hall South

Another student supports this technique: “Dr. Sood is exceptional at what he does. It’s about turning these advanced analytics tools into something approachable and applicable.”

He also creates a classroom environment where it’s OK to experiment and even fail at first. “This hands-on, trial-and-error approach is vital for understanding the nuances of these analytical tools,” he says. “Every student has their own way of learning.”

Another nominating student wrote: “Dr. Sood’s teaching methods and interaction with the class helped us improve in that subject and made us curious to know more with his very interesting examples.”

Receiving the Golden Apple Awards is a humbling and genuinely rewarding experience, says Sood. “I want to see my students not just learning but actively preparing to navigate and lead in a data-driven marketing landscape.”

Another student underscored Sood’s teaching style with a short and to-the-point statement: “Simply the best.”

Tags

FACULTY AWARDS

featured faculty

Thu, 07 Mar 2024 18:12:25 +0000 ilseu 2445 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu Effectiveness Rather Than Just Practicality https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/blog/2024/02/29/effectiveness-rather-just-practicality Effectiveness Rather Than Just Practicality clin246 Thu, 02/29/2024 - 09:55 More Blog Posts <picture> </picture> Laurie McLaughlin February 29, 2024
During the process for nominating faculty for the prestigious Golden Apple Award, a student evaluated the classroom style and instruction of Professor of Practice Sean Jasso: “He’s definitely one of the best professors I’ve ever had. The annual award goes to scholars who have made “a significant long-run impact on the field of marketing.”

“It is a great honor and we have never expected this paper to be recognized by the prestigious Long Term Impact award,” Joo said.

Joo, a marketing professor at UCR’s School of Business, examined how television advertising stimulates Google searches. Using internal Google data and collaborating with Google staff, Joo and his co-authors detailed how television ads for financial services increased both the number of related Google searches and searchers' tendency to use branded keywords in place of generic keywords. The study also identified how these cross-media effects are essential to the planning, executing, and evaluating of both television and online search advertising campaigns.

Firms that ignored such cross-media effects likely spent too much on digital ads and too little on television, Joo said in a statement to INFORMS Society. But today, agencies measure how offline ads increase digital traffic to allow for more cost-effective advertising campaigns.

“At the time we wrote this article, we were hopeful to influence the shift, and we are happy to observe practitioners’ higher attention to the cross-media spillovers,” Joo said.

Tags

Inside UCR

Mingyu Joo

FACULTY AWARDS

Research News

Wed, 19 Jul 2023 16:56:04 +0000 avija016 2370 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu UCR Business Professors Honored by Students https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/news/2023/05/26/students-honor-business-professors UCR Business Professors Honored by Students ilseu Fri, 05/26/2023 - 16:46 More News <picture> </picture> Laurie McLaughlin May 26, 2023
On May 19, faculty were honored by students for their achievements inside the classroom.
