Dr. Kyle E. Ingram is a seasoned world traveler. At age 19, he took a solo trip to Southeast Asia. As assistant professor of teaching in management, he has led several cohorts of UCR’s London Leadership Experience.

None of that prepared him for what he found when he attended a conference on sustainable leadership last year in Brazil.

“It's a world I've never seen,” Ingram said. “From the moment I arrived, it was enchanting. The land speaks to you. I can’t emphasize enough how warm and friendly the people are.”

Those aren’t Brazil’s only enchanting qualities. It also boasts stunning architecture, incredible food and vibrant culture. And it’s a growing economic powerhouse that is home to one of the most respected business schools in the world, Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC).

Now, thanks to a partnership with FDC, School of Business students have an opportunity to gain a first-hand perspective on this South American marvel through The Brazilian Leadership Experience.

Led by Ingram, the Aug. 3-21 program will provide an exploration of leadership and sustainability, company visits and roundtables, and cultural and culinary experiences. Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to apply is Feb. 14. (See details below.)

Eye-opening opportunity

The program includes two weeks in Rio de Janeiro and a week in Belo Horizonte, home to FDC. Plans include case studies in partnership with FDC graduate students and judged by FDC faculty; a session on inspirational leadership at the famed Sugar Loaf Mountain; and a visit to a favela — one of the impoverished neighborhoods FDC is helping to thrive as self-sufficient communities.

FDC, which often partners with Ivy League universities, has developed an impressively rigorous learning journey for UCR students, Ingram said.

This is a rich opportunity for students to understand the role of business and leadership within the emerging economic alliance known as BRICS — originally consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. With recent additions of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, BRICS is developing into an economic counterweight to the West. Brazil’s economy alone is projected to become the world’s fourth-largest by 2050.

“U.S. students cannot afford to be naïve about the fact that other markets are emerging very quickly,” Ingram said. “We need to not only recognize the momentum but be integrated with it as well.”

Ingram, who teaches courses on designing and leading teams, looks forward to students observing the approach in Brazil to sustainable leadership.

“That’s something that needs to be recognized more by students in the U.S. — to see the impact that an organization’s leaders have on their communities,” he said.

Broadening horizons

As part of UCR’s Faculty Led Education Abroad Programs (FLEAP), The Brazilian Leadership Experience is a an eight-unit program with two upper-division management electives: BUS 145 Designing and Leading Teams, and BUS 190 Special Studies.

Experiencing these courses in an international context will highlight the challenges students will face in an increasingly globalized world. Courses are designed to take students out of their comfort zone to inspire personal development and growth — one of the greatest advantages of studying abroad, Ingram said.

“As with all these trips, my goal is to enable students to experience firsthand the things that have motivated me on international journeys,” he said. “There’s a moment when you can see it in their eyes. It happens in real time throughout the journey.”

Students can expect to feel safe and welcomed by the Brazilian people, Ingram said. Language will not be a barrier — many people speak English, and the group will be accompanied by people fluent in Portuguese.

For students concerned about the cost, Ingram notes that multiple scholarship programs are available and listed on the program’s website. (Applications should be completed before applying to the program.)

“This trip is worth it for the change it will make in your life,” Ingram said.

“Be prepared to be blown away in a very good way, around every corner — cathedrals, samba music coming from cafes, massive outdoor markets. The food is incredible,” he said. “You should be ready for beauty many people have never had the opportunity to see.”

During the process for nominating faculty for the prestigious Golden Apple Award, a student evaluated the classroom style and instruction of Professor of Practice Sean Jasso: “He’s definitely one of the best professors I’ve ever had. His classes are challenging, and the work is not easy, but a rigorous institution would expect that from a top professor. His lectures are focused on effectiveness rather than just practicality. He is an amazing professor.”

This evaluation reflects Jasso’s mission to ensure students take advantage of both lessons learned in the classroom and the opportunities beyond campus—even across the world—to strengthen their skills, enhance their knowledge, and bolster their capabilities as they enter the job market.

Jasso received the 2022-2023 Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence for undergraduate prerequisite and core courses. The honor is voted and presented by students annually at a spring banquet to faculty members providing the best overall classroom experience for learning engagement, teaching style, and innovative teaching methods. He also received the Golden Apple Award in 2017 and 2018.

Jasso teaches core courses, including Strategic Management, Corporate Strategy, Marketing Management, Judgement and Decision Making, and Ethics and Law in Business and Society. “I’ve taken six of Dr. Jasso’s courses, and I understand that everything he teaches and stands for is built on a foundation of strong ethics and morality,” wrote a student during nominations. “He challenges us to behave ethically.”

Jasso joined UCR in 2003, and he has led the UCR School of Business’s educational domestic and international travel program for 13 years. In 2023, he established an endowed gift: the Dr. Sean Drake Jasso Global Scholarship, which will help fund student travel.

“In all the years that I’ve done the global programs, I’ve been moving toward creating a scholarship. I want to help students in need see the world,” he says.

“Dr. Jasso helps students by spending his own free time and effort to create global programs so that UCR students are more global-minded,” wrote another student recommending Jasso for the Golden Apple.

“A global mindset enables students to broaden their perspectives on everything,” adds Jasso. “The objective is for our students to gain confidence and strengthen their overall competitive value in the labor market.”

Jasso also serves as adviser to the many competitive teams representing the School of Business and the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management at national, state, and local case competitions, and these contests require months of research and teamwork in addition to the students’ usual academic load.

“I personally know Dr. Jasso has helped quite a few first-generation college students develop a deeper and more integrated understanding of business and strategy as team members for case competitions,” was another nomination statement from a student.

Added another: “He loves what he does, and it shows.”

In August 2023, 12 students, family members, and friends traveled to Egypt and Jordan—a “bucket list” trip, says Professor of Practice Sean Jasso, who directs the global education program at the School of Business.

Each December, a dozen students also travel to Washington, D.C., and about 25 students take an annual trip to Oxford, England.

“A global mindset enables students to broaden their perspectives on everything,” says Jasso. “The whole point is gaining confidence and strengthening their overall competitive value in the labor market.”

In the last year, students from the UCR School of Business, home of the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management made educational journeys that greatly enhanced their knowledge of global business practices:

Egypt

Over 10 days in August 2023, the UCR Business cohort traveled to Egypt and Jordan, exploring the region’s entrepreneurial economy, including women in leadership, the customer service-centric society, and examples of foreign direct investment. The immersive journey showcases the instructive startup culture in Tel Aviv, as well as one of the largest cities in the world, Cairo, and its contrasts in antiquity and modernity.

Oxford

Over the last 13 years, hundreds of UCR Business students have spent spring break in residency at University of Oxford’s Mansfield College in England. The Oxford Young Entrepreneurial Leadership Program is an intensive week of lectures and tours—including the BMW Mini Cooper manufacturing facility known for its supply chain efficiencies and globalization. Students take a close look at European business norms and trends, as well as focusing on entrepreneurial awareness, intellectual creativity, and strategic leadership capabilities that may be applied in all industries.

Washington, D.C.

The annual DC Intensive Program brings students in direct contact with policymakers, business leaders, and policy scholars at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government. The visit to the nation’s capital includes briefings with a lobbying firm, the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Reserve, and private tours of national and cultural monuments. During the December 2023 visit, students examined political polarization, gender and race in the policy context, and national security and intelligence.

Faculty Led Education Abroad Programs (FLEAP)

Over three weeks, the London Leadership Experience, which is part of the Faculty Led Education Abroad Programs, covers two leadership courses intended to push students out of their comfort zones. The curriculum includes visits to the offices of Google and Deutsche Bank, and students present projects to be judged by panels of international business leaders.

“These stretch assignments enable students to grow,” says Assistant Professor of Teaching in Management Kyle Ingram, who leads the London Leadership Experience. “Through these experiences, you begin to see the world differently and thereby grow leadership capacity.

“Personally, I can't think of a better opportunity to engage in a stretch assignment than an international experience.”

FLEAP courses occur during the summer and are for UCR students and led by UCR professors. Courses cover a range of majors and are planned for travel to several countries.

Over the course of 10 years, Sean Jasso, Ph.D., has led UCR students on 25 global immersion trips: 11 trips to Oxford, England. Twice to India, once to Turkey. Seven trips to China and four to Vietnam.

All of them have one thing in common.

“A global mindset changes you,” said Jasso, professor of practice for the School of Business.

“Whether it’s in England or Saigon, it changes you,” he said. “It teaches perspective. It also inspires you to think competitively and differently about your position in the marketplace – which is pretty much a global marketplace.”

COVID-19 disrupted global immersion plans over the last 18 months, but trips are scheduled for Washington, D.C. in December 2021 and Oxford in March 2022, with trips to Vietnam, Brazil, China, Silicon Valley and New York City in early planning stages.

While the uncertainty and disruption have been frustrating, Jasso remains confident the programs will resume and continue to provide extraordinary opportunities for students.

Offered exclusively through UCR’s School of Business, the Global Immersion Programs offer opportunities for students of all majors, undergraduate and graduate, to gain international experience through a first-hand look at the most important, dynamic and emerging markets in the world.

In recent years, the trips have focused on entrepreneurial leadership, with emerging-market destinations chosen for their roles in areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and the changing world of work.

Although Oxford is not an emerging market, it offers the opportunity for students to be in residence in the world’s oldest English-speaking university – and to visit the startup environment of East London.

One student described his exposure to world-class lectures and site visits by saying, “The Oxford Program opened doors for me.” Jasso agrees, saying every international experience will enhance a student’s profile for employment.

“If someone sees Oxford on your resume, or another international university, that's going to get you out of the pile of resumes,” he said. “For an employer, I think it shows that you take risks and that you put yourself out there.”

True to the description of global immersion, each trip includes multiple opportunities to experience the local culture, whether through food, service projects or daily life.

“You’re going to eat food out of your comfort zone, adapt and compete, and gain that perspective beyond the media, beyond stereotype,” Jasso said. “It’s not about luxury, it’s about learning.”

Jasso, Professor of Practice at the School of Business, devotes his time to teaching UCR students business strategy and the business world on a global level. He recently took students to Mexico City, New York and Washington, D.C. as part of the growing Global Programs portfolio, and led students on a residency program in Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City to experience first-hand Asia’s emerging markets.

About taking students abroad, he says, “We get to see the students for who they are outside of their school work, and we can really prepare them for competing in a very fierce environment outside of the university. And our students are very well prepared to do that.”

Global Programs, led by Jasso since 2010, has given hundreds of students from all majors across campus – both undergraduate, graduate and alumni – global exposure and firsthand interaction with the world’s most dynamic and emerging markets.

Global Programs established the annual Oxford Young Entrepreneurial Leadership Program at Mansfield College, Oxford in 2010. In the last few years, the Program has expanded to include China, Vietnam, Mexico City, Washington, D.C., and New York.

UCR Business Global Programs Adds Washington, D.C. and New York City to its Dynamic Portfolio

In September 2018, the UCR Business Global Programs launched its new trip to Washington, D.C. and New York City called Politics, Policy and Finance: The Governing Institutions of the United States.

Students had private visits to the White House, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Supreme Court and Arlington Cemetery. Additional visits included private meetings with policy makers such as the Assistant Secretary of Labor, a “K” Street Lobbying firm and customized tours of D.C.'s most notable monuments. In partnership with George Mason University's Schar School of Public Policy, students participated in a televised panel discussion on national security hosted by retired generals Michael Hayden and James Clapper.

The Program then moved north to New York City where the team toured Wall Street, including the New York Stock Exchange, the newly built World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial. The program was complete with private meetings with investment bankers from Barclays and Merryl Lynch while experiencing the Manhattan subway system, standing on top of the Empire State Building and enjoying a Broadway Show.

Earlier in June 2018, the Global Programs returned to Mexico City visiting the political and economic epicenters of Mexico City including the U.S. Embassy, the Presidential Palace, and Air Design – a global auto parts manufacturing firm. Lectures included topics on NAFTA, the political economy of American and Mexican relations, race and class relations, and doing business in Mexico and Latin America. Cultural visits included a heritage ballet performance at the National Palace of the Arts, a tour of the Xochimilco Community Development Project, and hiking to the top of the Pyramids at Teotihuacan.

Established in 2010, the Global Programs has given hundreds of students from all majors across campus – both undergraduate, graduate and alumni – global exposure and first-hand interaction with the world’s most dynamic and emerging markets.

Our Global Programs for the 2018-2019 year include China and Vietnam in December 2018; Oxford Spring Break 2019; Israel in June 2019; Washington D.C. / New York Sept 2019.
