Margaret “Meg” C. Campbell, an associate dean, professor of marketing, and Anderson Presidential Chair in Business Administration at UC Riverside’s School of Business, has received the Fellows Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Consumer Psychology.

The Society for Consumer Psychology, or SCP, a top professional organization of academics and practitioners focused on consumer psychology, presented Campbell with the honor at the group’s annual conference on Saturday, March 9, in Nashville, Tenn. The Fellows Award is one of the society’s most prestigious recognitions, reserved for individuals whose work has made a lasting and meaningful impact on the field.

The award recognized Campbell for her years of scholarship, research impact, and her work with the field, SCP, and the Journal of Consumer Psychology. She has been a co-editor of a special issue of the Journal of Consumer Psychology on Marketplace Morality, a co-editor of the Journal of Consumer Research, or JCR, and has served in leadership roles for both SCP and the Association for Consumer Research. These leadership roles have allowed her to contribute not only as a researcher but also as a mentor and guide, shaping the direction of consumer psychology research and supporting the professional development of other scholars in the field.

Campbell has made groundbreaking contributions to the literature about persuasion knowledge and price fairness. Her research has advanced understanding of how consumers evaluate marketing tactics, how they form judgments about fairness in pricing, and how these perceptions influence decision-making in the marketplace. Her published work has been widely cited, with more than 10,000 Google Scholar citations, demonstrating its influence and continued relevance across marketing, psychology, and business disciplines.

Previous honors for Campbell reflect the sustained quality and impact of her scholarship. These include the JCP 2019 Park Award Honorable Mention, the 2017 JCR Best Article Honorable Mention, and the JCR 40th Anniversary Most Impactful Paper of 2000. Each of these recognitions underscores the significance of her contributions over time, from early career achievements to her most recent work.

Campbell joined UC Riverside in 2021 and currently serves as the faculty chair of the School of Business and the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management. In these roles, she provides academic leadership and strategic direction, helping to guide the School of Business in its mission to foster innovation, inclusivity, and excellence in business education. Her experience as a scholar and leader enhances the school’s reputation and creates opportunities for students and faculty alike to engage in impactful research and applied learning.

Before arriving at UC Riverside, Campbell was the provost professor of marketing at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her academic career has included several other positions that highlight her dedication to advancing both research and education. Through these roles, she has taught and mentored countless students, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia and industry.

Campbell received a doctoral degree in business from Stanford University in 1992. That training provided the foundation for her distinguished career in consumer psychology, one that has combined rigorous scholarship with a commitment to service and leadership. The Fellows Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Consumer Psychology marks another milestone in a career defined by influence, impact, and the advancement of knowledge.

Every year, Associate Professor of Marketing Ashish Sood shakes up about 20% of his curriculum.

“Why? Well, the marketing world doesn’t stand still, and neither should we,” says Sood. “I bring in the latest industry buzz and academic insights to keep my classes fresh and relevant. It’s all about giving my students the up-to-the-minute knowledge they need.”

This steadfast commitment to staying ahead of the industry is popular among his students, and they awarded him the 2022-2023 Golden Apple Award in two categories: one for graduate core courses and another for graduate elective courses.

In nominating Sood for the awards, various graduate students commented: “Dr. Sood is accessible and really cares about his students.” “He is a helpful professor with a passion for teaching and for job referrals.” “Wonderful learning experience.”

Another student commented, “He is a marketing guru and brings a lot of great insight and hands-on activities,” which reflects Sood’s teaching style.

Sood classes are not your typical sit-and-listen lectures: “We start with an hour of lecture, sure, but the rest of our three-hour session is all about getting your hands dirty with practical stuff,” says Sood, and his students don’t just learn the concepts; they live them.

The professor also brings in three to four guest speakers each quarter. “Many are former students who are out there making waves in different industries,” he says. “They share their real-world experiences, giving us a peek into how things work outside our classroom walls.”

This mix of fresh curriculum, interactive sessions, and insights from the field ensures MBA students get an education that’s not just about books and theories but about the real, ever-evolving world of marketing.

Another student supports this technique: “Dr. Sood is exceptional at what he does. He has made the class more interesting, interactive, and fun.”

Of course, MBA courses are not just about the basics, adds Sood. “Marketing has become increasingly data driven, and we dive deep into models, like regression analysis, classification models, and clustering techniques. It’s about turning these advanced analytics tools into something approachable and applicable.”

He also creates a classroom environment where it’s OK to experiment and even fail at first. “This hands-on, trial-and-error approach is vital for understanding the nuances of these analytical tools,” he says. “Every student has their own way of learning.”

Another nominating student wrote: “Dr. Sood’s teaching methods and interaction with the class helped us improve in that subject and made us curious to know more with his very interesting examples.”

Receiving the Golden Apple Awards is a humbling and genuinely rewarding experience, says Sood. “I want to see my students not just learning but actively preparing to navigate and lead in a data-driven marketing landscape.”

Another student underscored Sood’s teaching style with a short and to-the-point statement: “Simply the best.”

When asked why she was compelled to earn a business education herself, Professor of Accounting Ivy Zhang’s answer is definitive: “I have always been intrigued by the dynamic nature of the business world, where innovation, strategy, and problem-solving intersect.

A business education offered me the opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of commerce.”

From the beginning, Zhang was fascinated by how business connects people, organizations, and global markets. She recognized that pursuing a business degree would not only provide her with technical knowledge, but also sharpen her ability to analyze issues from multiple perspectives and solve problems that have real-world impact. This broad foundation gave her the tools to explore where her passions and skills intersected most strongly.

Among the many disciplines within business, accounting stood out. “I was captivated by the ability of accounting to translate complex financial data into meaningful information that helps stakeholders,” she says. “Accounting also offers a dynamic and evolving landscape, with the advent of technology and data analytics revolutionizing the profession.”

This perspective reflects how accounting is no longer limited to recordkeeping. For Zhang, it is a language of business — one that helps companies, investors, and communities understand performance, assess opportunities, and plan for the future. By combining precision with interpretation, accounting has allowed her to bridge the technical side of business with its human impact.

Zhang joined the UCR School of Business in 2018, bringing her expertise and passion to students preparing to enter a wide range of professions. Teaching, for her, is more than sharing knowledge. “One of the primary reasons I chose to be a professor was the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of students as a mentor and educator,” she says. “Guiding students through their academic journeys, seeing them overcome challenges, and witnessing their intellectual growth is incredibly gratifying.”

This commitment has shaped her teaching style. She works with both undergraduate and graduate students, adapting her methods to ensure that each classroom becomes a space for curiosity and growth. In her courses, theory is paired with application, and she emphasizes collaboration as much as individual achievement. Group projects, case studies, and simulations give students the chance to test ideas, learn from each other, and build confidence in real-world settings.

“By engaging in practical tasks, students can demonstrate their comprehension and develop essential skills that are transferable beyond the classroom setting,” she says. “My goal is to create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable and motivated to explore new and sometimes complex concepts.”

For Zhang, teaching is not just about delivering content but about cultivating resilience and independence in her students. She strives to prepare them for challenges they will face as professionals, ensuring they leave her classroom not only with technical knowledge but also with adaptability, critical thinking skills, and confidence. Her dedication underscores the central mission of the UCR School of Business: empowering students to succeed in an increasingly complex and interconnected business world.

Ivy Zhang’s research focuses on two areas: the CEO labor market and social media. She recently co-authored “Outside Opportunities, Managerial Risk Taking, and CEO Compensation” in The Accounting Review.

On May 19, faculty were honored by students for their achievements inside the classroom. The evening was hosted by AGSM Student Association President Merve Sekercigellar ’23 PMBA, and awards were presented to faculty for teaching excellence.

“As you know, the faculty of the School of Business are world-renowned scholars, publishing in top academic journals. They are also outstanding teachers and mentors,” said Sekercigellar at the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management’s Student Association Banquet celebrating the end of the academic year. “Each year, the school provides students the opportunity to vote for the professors who have had the greatest impact on them during the academic year.”

There are three award categories: the Golden Apple recognizes teaching excellence in the core and prerequisite courses and elective courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels for a total of four awards; the James Merino Innovation Award; and the Schulman Endowed Excellence in Teaching Award.

In presenting a 2023 Golden Apple award, MBA student Kyla Sycip ’23 said: “The Golden Apple Award is for the professor who, in the estimation of students, has provided the best overall experience in terms of learning, engagement, teaching style, and innovative teaching methods.”

Associate Professor of Marketing Ashish Sood was recognized with two Golden Apple awards—for excellence in teaching in graduate core courses and for graduate elective courses. “[Sood is] described by his students as accessible, caring, passionate about teaching, and able to connect course theory to real world applications,” said Sycip.

The Golden Apple for excellence in teaching the undergraduate prerequisite and core courses was awarded to Professor of Practice Sean Jasso by Chief Undergraduate Student Ambassador Jaya Gazula ’24, who is earning bachelor’s degrees in both public policy and business administration with a concentration in management, and School of Business Leadership Council President John Healey ’23, who is earning a bachelor’s in business administration concentrating in accounting and auditing.

“[Professor Jasso] is engaging and passionate,” said the presenters. “His students say that while his classes can be difficult, they were the among the best learning experiences, and everything he teaches and stands for is built upon a foundation of strong ethics and morality.”

Gazula and Healey awarded the Golden Apple for teaching excellence in undergraduate elective courses to Assistant Professor of Teaching in Marketing Jonathan Lim.

“[Professor Lim] is amazing and enthusiastic and makes the course material easy to understand,” said the presenters. “He supports his students in an accessible and fun learning environment and creates a sense of community among classmates.”

Gazula and Sycip jointly presented two more awards, which were voted on by both undergraduate and graduate students.

Assistant Professor of Teaching in Management Kyle Ingram received the James Merino Innovation Award, which recognizes a faculty member for bringing innovative ways of teaching or utilizing innovative tools and technologies in the classroom.

Gazula and Sycip shared comments by students who voted for Ingram: “‘This professor is an incredible teacher and is thankfully doing what he is meant to do. He makes an indelible mark on all his students’; ‘In his class, I was able to truly experience teamwork in a way I had never experienced before. It was just such an amazing and fun experience’; and ‘Working continuously with one group allowed me to make some great connections and build relationships. The issues faced between members allowed me to implement the theories from class as we tried to solve issues that arose between one another.’”

Professor of Practice Raj Singh received the Shulman Endowed Excellence in Teaching award, which recognizes an outstanding faculty member who embodies the fulfillment of learning through their excellence in teaching.

Gazula and Sycip shared comments from student voters about Singh: “‘He is an outstanding professor who is dedicated to teaching his students about real world topics that will benefit us in the future;’ ‘His unique teaching technique engages students and creates an environment that allows them to look outside of the box and tie their experiences to the learning material;’ ‘He continuously makes sure the class is on track for understanding the material so we excel in the course;’ ‘He was able to increase my ability to participate in class by being empathetic.’”

Congratulations to each of these stellar professors as they bring their unique and effective teaching styles into the classroom.

It is no surprise that Subramanian Balachander is a professor. “My story as a teacher begins at a young age,” he says. When he was in eighth grade, his father transferred jobs, the family moved, and Balachander found himself at a new school with an advanced curriculum. “Previously, I had been excelling in my studies, but I found myself struggling in algebra and geometry classes,” he says.

“That is when my mother rescued me. She sat with me and taught me and made it look easy. I learned the importance of teaching and the gift of knowledge from this experience.” He went on to teach his younger siblings and tutored in high school. While working in the corporate world, “even some of my work colleagues thought I should be a professor based on how I approached things,” says Balachander. “So, I guess, I have been a teacher most of my life.”

A Constant Evolution into New Areas of Knowledge

Earnest. That is how Balachander, professor of marketing, describes his approach to teaching.

“I am earnest in the belief that critical thinking skills are crucial to good learning and to be successful in life and career,” he says. “In today’s dynamic and complex business environment, it is not possible to teach everything, and even if you teach a lot of things related to what is happening today, knowledge gets obsolete very quickly.

“However, critical thinking allows you to adapt to new situations and become a lifelong learner.”

His courses cultivate critical thinking skills by employing active learning and decision-making through case analyses and discussion, experiential exercises, and simulations. “Students who have gone through my courses typically are ready to become valuable contributors to their organizations on day one,” he says.

Balachander joined the UC Riverside School of Business and the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management in 2016 as the Albert O. Steffey Chair, which was established to promote excellence in research and teaching. Balachander also serves as the academic director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program, the area coordinator for the marketing department, and he is a member of the business school’s Executive Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.

However, his true devotion lies within the classroom, where he teaches marketing strategy to undergraduate and master’s students, digital marketing to master’s students, and marketing models at the Ph.D. level. Balachander relishes the opportunity to teach students in a discipline defined by its constant evolution.

Education on the Very Forefront of Business and Data Analytics

“In today’s gadget and internet-driven world, tremendous amounts of data—so-called big data—is being accumulated from ecommerce, online advertising, social media, wireless sensors, mobile devices, video feeds, and the like,” says Balachander when asked about the importance of earning a master’s in business analytics.

“Businesses and other organizations want to utilize this hitherto unused mountain of data to derive insights that will help improve their operations and gain a competitive advantage. Therefore, they are in a rush to hire employees who have the skills to analyze these huge quantities of data.”

MSBA students have already proved a quantitative aptitude and interest in solving business problems and using data analytics through their admission to the program, adds Balachander, and UCR’s MSBA curriculum is taught collaboratively by the School of Business and the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences’ Department of Statistics.

“The courses taught by statistics faculty typically provide the key concepts and skills required to extract and prepare data, make valid inferences about variables that affect outcomes of interest, and develop and test predictive models for these outcomes,” says Balachander.

“The courses taught in the School of Business integrate these data analytic skills with the concepts necessary to understand what makes businesses successful, which enables students to understand what data may be relevant to address a business problem and to know how to translate the results for business data analytics into recommendations for the business.”

Balachander’s Research Examines the Effectiveness of Marketing Strategies

Balachander currently has several co-authored marketing research projects nearing completion. Two of these include:

Studying the optimal sales incentives—individual or group incentives—that brands which manage their own retail sales should offer their retail salespeople: “Examples of brand-managed retail include store-in-store formats, such as the cosmetic counters in major department stores or brand-managed stand-alone stores, such as Aveda or Gap,” he says. “We first analyze a theoretical model in this research, which suggests that relatively weaker brands could benefit from using group incentives in comparison to stronger brands, which may be better off with individual incentives.”
Examination of optimal promotions for brands that aim to be considered by consumers during the purchase process: “For example, in 2010, Suzuki announced a nationwide promotion, the Kizashi Test-Drive Challenge, offering prospective sedan buyers $250 for adding the Kizashi to their consideration lists,” says Balachander. “Buyers in auto markets visit only 1.6 auto dealerships on average because of the high search costs in terms of time and money. In this research, we develop a model of consumer search behavior, and we then estimate the parameter of the model using survey data from U.S. car buyers reporting the set of car models they considered during their purchase process and the model they eventually chose. Using the estimated model, we are able to project the results of running alternative test-drive promotions.”

Finding a Teaching Career

After earning an MBA in marketing, Balachander worked in management consulting in operations, marketing, and finance. He realized he was most “interested in marketing problems as strategic decisions, which were more important for the health and future of any organization and require integration of information about consumers, competitors, and market conditions—all of which were quite fluid and hard to predict,” he says.

While working in a corporate marketing environment, he fine-tuned his interests and realized he wanted to spend less time on mundane tasks and more time “on issues involving critical thinking about marketing,” he says, and he headed to Carnegie Mellon University to earn a Ph.D. in marketing. He was a professor at Purdue University, University of Maryland, and Clark University before arriving at UCR.

Looking back, he remembers his time studying for his doctoral degree, and says: “I found myself absorbing great ideas about marketing, economics, and business from great faculty minds.” Today, Balachander is doing the same for his own university students.

Assistant Professor of Teaching in Information Systems Rich Yueh is “literally the GOAT,” said one of his students referring to the popular acronym for “greatest of all time.” This compliment is representative of the many enthusiastic reviews of Yueh’s teaching style, and students recently voted to acknowledge him with the UCR School of Business’s 2021-2022 James Merino Innovation Award.

The award was created by James Merino, an expert in the field of data science, and annually recognizes a professor who inspires innovation and brings new ideas into the classroom, in addition to integrating teaching practices and strategies that improve students’ learning online, face-to-face, or a blend of the two.

“His methodology truly embodies the fundamental goal of education: to teach students so that they learn, understand, and remember,” wrote another student

reviewing Yueh, who teaches undergraduate core course BUS 101 Information Technology Management and MBA core course MGT 205 Information Systems. “He was readily available to help with our coding, and his results-based curriculum resulted in work that I can point to and say, ‘Look, I built this.’”

Staying current, says Yueh, is paramount as a professor: “Technology is becoming a bigger part of our lives, and I update my courses every quarter to include trending technologies, mainstream concepts, and modern tools,” he says.

Yueh also looks to his own life experience to tailor his teaching. “I’m an immigrant, and my parents came to America for a better life,” he adds. “For many UCR students, this education is a chance to bring their families a higher quality of life.

“I know my course is just a small step along that path. Every student has a story to tell, and I’m invested in my students’ success because I want them to create and share their stories.”

Having previously worked at Yahoo! in the Bay Area (which, coincidentally, is also where James Merino worked at one time), students seek Yueh’s advice for landing internships and jobs. “I also use my Silicon Valley tech industry experience to help students navigate their career searches or understand how they can apply their strengths to the field,” he says.

Another student in one of Yueh’s courses said, “I have no previous experience with information systems, and he explained it in different ways for those students who are more visual than analytical.”

There’s no shortage of fresh ideas in the ever-evolving technology industry, according to Yueh, and he applies the same inventive attitude to his instructional style: “To better teach my students, I study communication and pedagogical techniques from areas and disciplines outside of academia, including Formula One teams and improvisational comedy.”

Last year, Yueh also received the School of Business’s student-voted 2020-2021 Golden Apple Award in the categories of preparation for business administration major and upper division major requirements. In 2019-2020, the students selected him for the same award in the category of graduate elective courses, and he was presented with the Outstanding Disability Ally award by the UCR Student Disability Resource Center.

Yueh is especially interested in making sure his students succeed after graduation and serves as a mentor providing guidance and tools. “My vote goes to Professor Yueh because I am using 75% of what he taught us in my current internship,” wrote another student. “That knowledge has helped me stand above the other interns.”

Professor Kyle Ingram was honored last spring with the 2022 Innovative Teaching Award from UC Riverside and the Shulman Endowed Excellence in Teaching Award from the UCR School of Business.

His enthusiasm combined with his great teaching style makes the class very enjoyable,” said one of Ingram’s students in a review of the professor’s interaction in the classroom. “He is easy to connect with and brings out the best in every

student. He combines theory from well-research journals but lets students speak about their own experiences.”

The award reflects Ingram’s passion for his craft. “I firmly believe the efforts we make through investing in our students will be rewarded 10 times over,” says Ingram, who is a professor of teaching in management. “My motivation is deeply rooted in recognizing the responsibility we have as professors to create experiences for our students that they will carry with them long into the future.”

Ingram was also recognized with the School of Business Golden Apple Award—students vote to honor professors providing the best overall classroom experience—in 2018 for elective courses and 2019 for preparation for business administration and upper-division major core requirement courses.

His care and attention ensuring an immersive classroom experience is reflected in another student’s review: “Professor Ingram is extremely attentive to all of students in the class and manages to interact with all of us—even during the pandemic. “The amount of participation every individual has in class amazes me, … and I look forward attending his lecture every time.”

The business school’s Shulman Endowed Excellence in Teaching Award rewards exemplary business professors who embody the fulfillment of learning through excellence and achievements in teaching, as demonstrated by Professor David Shulman, former associate professor of management and economics.

The university’s Innovative Teaching Award recognizes professors for their creative and innovative high-impact teaching methods and exceptional passion for finding new and effective ways to help students learn.

“The experience and knowledge from this class will be very beneficial for me when I enter the workforce,” says one of his students. “I learned a lot in the course, but I’ve also learned even more about myself as a leader and team member.”

Dr. Ashish Sood , assistant professor of marketing, was awarded $110,000 from the University of California Innovative Learning Technology Initiative (ILTI), to enhance the learning and engagement experience of students at UCR School of Business.

Dr. Sood received the funds to carry out his innovative proposal for the development and enhancement of the Pricing Strategy and Management course which he teaches. The course of pricing management is an applied course that draws from many fields (e.g., consumer psychology, sociology, behavioral economics, and econometrics).

He plans to use the funds to convert his course into a hybrid class that maximizes instructional time and cuts down the cost of higher education through a two-fold strategy: creating online courses and using interactive programs that reinforce online teachings.

“Online education has tremendous potential to transform the quality of student learning and engagement,” Dr. Sood explains. “The recent strategic initiative by the UCR School of Business identified engagement as one of our key strategic goals, and pairs nicely with the vision of the ILTI. The School of Business is working towards deepening student engagement by creating a challenging learning environment. I saw an opportunity to contribute to these goals with the resources made available by the Innovative Learning Technology Initiative.”

The University of California Innovative Learning Technology Initiative (ILTI) was established in 2013, to meet the UC campus educational need for high quality online courses that will help UC undergraduates get the courses they need, satisfy degree requirements, and graduate on time.

Dr. Ashish Sood is an assistant professor of marketing. Dr. Sood earned his Ph.D. from UCLA, and MBA from Nanyang Technological U., and B.E. from Delhi College of Engineering.

UC Women's Initiative for Professional Development

Elaine Wong, Associate Professor of Management and Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Business Program, co-facilitated this year’s University of California Women’s Initiative for Professional Development (UCWI), an award-winning program recently recognized as the “Best Advance in Women’s Leadership Development” by the Brandon Hall Group.

Supported by the Office of the President, the UCWI is a system-wide experiential professional development program offered to mid-career women, including faculty, academic personnel and staff, who demonstrate the potential to advance their careers at UC.

I’m proud to be part of a system that applauds diversity and appreciates the unique challenges faced by its future leaders. Participants in this program are remarkable, and will clearly make a substantial positive impact on the University of California in the future.”

Wong, an expert in organizational behavior and leadership development, is currently engaged with the UC system to research the impact of this training program in the workplace.
