The analysis examined a very specific labor market – musicians on Soundcloud, a major online music sharing and distribution platform – and found that following Stockholm, musicians were most likely to have migrated to Berlin, Sao Paulo, Toronto, and Paris.

The top U.S. city, Philadelphia, appears seventh on the list of regions musicians moved to the most. Overall, American cities performed relatively poorly with the bottom 11 cities on the list, which either lost musicians or remained flat, all located in the United States. In addition to Philadelphia, U.S. cities that gained musicians were Washington, D.C.; Nashville; and San Diego.

“Part of the reason for the weaker results in U.S. metros may be due to repatriation,” says Patrick Adler, research manager at the Center for Forecasting & Development, and the report’s author. “If migrants had previously moved to the U.S. from areas like Stockholm, Berlin, and Toronto, the pandemic might have motivated them to return.”

Prior to the pandemic, roughly 30% of Soundcloud musicians were from Los Angeles, New York, London, or Nashville – and this topline number remained the same as London and Nashville gained musicians during the crisis while the other two "superstar metros" lost out.

Regional differences aside, in the aggregate, the study finds that the pandemic did not drive musician migration to any great extent. Of 11,503 Soundcloud artists who qualified for the study, only 308 indicated that they moved to a new region between August of 2019 and October of 2020.

“This is fully consistent with the view that technological changes that have swept other areas of the economy have been less profound for musicians, who have been using remote-friendly technology for longer,” says Adler.

Indeed, the study points out that not all knowledge-intensive work has changed due to the pandemic.

“Musicians are an intriguing case because the production of music is highly susceptible to remote-compatible digital technologies,” adds Adler. “But as early adopters of digital production techniques, they may be seeing muted effects.”

The analysis is part of the Center for Forecasting & Development’s ongoing research about changing urban fortunes during the pandemic. Recent analysis by Taner Osman, the center’s manager for regional and sub-regional analysis, considered the fates of dense downtown areas across the nation, and Adler is leading another study about San Bernardino’s recovery strategy.

The complete analysis, "Like a rolling stone? Musician migration during the pandemic," is available.

Header photo: Shutterstock

Tags

UCR School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development

UCR School of Business

music

UCR News

Fri, 19 Nov 2021 17:37:07 +0000 clin246 1831 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu Heading Up the Newly Released Hulu Ad Manager https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/news/2020/09/01/hulu-ad-manager-ucr Heading Up the Newly Released Hulu Ad Manager kathleed Tue, 09/01/2020 - 12:07 More News <picture> </picture> Laurie McLaughlin September 01, 2020
Krishna Ganapathi started his undergraduate studies in engineering because he had a passion for technology and how it works. “But throughout my college career, I also found myself gravitating toward business, trying to understand how customers think and how businesses meet and anticipate the need of customers.”

Today, Ganapathi’s work requires exactly those skills: He’s consulting as a technical program manager for Hulu in Santa Monica. Recently, the video-on-demand service launched Hulu Ad Manager, and Ganapathi was brought aboard to manage go-to-market workstreams for the product. A self-service product, Hulu Ad Manager makes targeted advertising on the entertainment platform financially possible for small- and medium-sized businesses.

“Hulu Ad Manager was a huge cross-team effort, and I was in charge of managing the moving pieces,” he says. “This ranged from ensuring the product was ready for launch to making sure we had our internal processes and tactics smoothed out along with new processes in place, like customer service.”

All while making sure the several shareholders were on the same page and moving in the same direction, he adds. “My role was a mix of ensuring readiness across teams, while being a subject-matter expert and championing the product internally.”

Ganapathi earned both a B.S. in business informatics in 2014 from UC Riverside’s Bourns College of Engineering and an MBA in 2016 from UC Riverside’s School of Business. His job experience began with an internship at Electronic Arts, a video game company. Armed with both degrees, he worked at Internet Brands media company as a technical project manager and then as an executive producer with a digital media agency. “This combination of digital media and technology bore fruit when I interviewed with Hulu,” he says, and he enjoys his work. “My role allows me to be technical when interfacing with engineering teams and also allows me to be a good collaborator and partner when working with non-engineering teams.”

Like so many stories about the reasons alumni studied business, Ganapathi’s decision involved a professor. “For me, it was [UC Riverside Professor of Practice] Sean Jasso. He was so passionate about teaching the class, and he and his fellow business professors cared about what I was learning. I knew that was an environment I wanted to be a part of,” he says. During his time at UCR, Ganapathi served as web technician chair for Circle K International service club and vice president of the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management Student Association. Since graduating, he’s also visited campus to share his professional journey with current students.

“At UCR, I learned how to learn, and I use this skill almost daily when presented with new information,” he says. “My business school experience is the foundation for everything I am doing now and everything I’ll do in the future.”

Tags

Krishna Ganapathi

Hulu

UCR School of Business

alumni

Tue, 01 Sep 2020 19:07:35 +0000 kathleed 1151 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu #SummerWithUCR Campaign Connects Incoming Cohort https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/news/2020/08/28/incoming-students-connect-summerwithucr #SummerWithUCR Campaign Connects Incoming Cohort kathleed Fri, 08/28/2020 - 11:14 More News <picture> </picture> By Darin Estep August 28, 2020
Every weekday this summer, Amisha Sharma ’21 has logged into Slack to connect with nearly 170 incoming School of Business students from around the globe. She might ask them to share a family photo or discuss career tips — but the real goal has been to help them feel at home at UC Riverside before they ever step foot on campus.

Sharma, a second-year MBA student and an intern in the International Relations office of the School of Business, developed the #SummerWithUCR campaign to overcome the challenges of geography and the restrictions of COVID-19.

“Because this year is very, very different from previous years, it was important to give a feel of how online engagement looks,” Sharma said. “So, we started with something fun and interactive and engaging.”

Based on the response from students, it has been a success.

“We have students from all over — Nigeria, Taiwan, China, India, Saudi Arabia and the United States as well — who are now friends with one another before orientation, and that’s never happened in the past,” said Tamra Johnson, associate director of International Relations for the School of Business.

Incoming students engage via Slack and are recognized for their level of participation.

Sharma chose Slack as the platform because it offers unrestricted access across the world. Incoming students are able to see videos of faculty interviews, ask questions and engage with one another. Each of the campaign’s eight weeks had daily activities based on a theme, such as #AllAboutParentsWeek, #CareerDevelopmentWeek, or #AskMeAnythingWeek.

The campaign offered modest incentives for participation — certificates and gift cards — but what seemed to matter most was an opportunity for students to engage, Sharma said.

“Every day there are a lot of students who want to participate, even in a week when we’re not giving out gift cards,” she said. “I received a message from a student from Sri Lanka, and she said, ‘It’s an amazing program. It is one of the best resources I have.’”

Sharma developed the concept following a brainstorming session over Zoom as the International Relations team discussed ways to encourage student retention in the pandemic era. Drawing on her past experience working for an online education company, she put together the plan in about a week. She collects all of the content herself and also engages with students one-on-one through text messages and video calls.

“This was 100 percent Amisha’s brainchild, from start to finish,” said Johnson, who added that the campaign reinforces UCR’s role as a diverse, inclusive, globally focused community.

“It’s extremely important for students to feel safe — especially for international students,” Johnson said. “They come a long way to go to school here. It’s a long way from home. All of us at UCR tie in safety to a community of belonging.”

Sharma herself is an international student — she completed her undergraduate studies in computer science at Manipal University Jaipur in India — and she agrees the #SummerWithUCR campaign supports the university-wide philosophy.

“I have never been in a school that is so diverse and at the same time respects the cultural diversity of where everybody’s coming from,” she said. “So that was definitely something that worked, because UCR is known as one of the most diverse schools by all our incoming students.”

Johnson and Sharma see opportunities for #SummerWithUCR to be part of engagement efforts beyond the pandemic.

“Next year,” Johnson said, “when our orientation is in person, instead of students walking in saying, ‘I wonder who these people are?’ they will walk in saying, ‘Oh my gosh, I know you!’ They will have spent eight weeks getting to know one another and getting to know us.”

_______________

Tamra Johnson, left, associate director of International Relations for the School of Business, and graduate student intern Amisha Sharma say the #SummerWithUCR campaign supports the university’s role as a diverse, inclusive, globally focused community.

Tags

#SummerWithUCR

Amisha Sharma

UCR School of Business

AGSM

Fri, 28 Aug 2020 18:14:37 +0000 kathleed 1146 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu Seven New Faculty Welcomed in 2018 https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/news/2019/01/10/seven-new-faculty-welcomed-2018 Seven New Faculty Welcomed in 2018 kmcnally Thu, 01/10/2019 - 15:57 More News January 10, 2019 Riverside, Ca
Seven New Faculty Welcomed in 2018

The UCR School of Business welcomed seven new faculty members in 2018 from some of the most prestigious universities in the United States.

Ming Leung, Associate Professor in Management

Ph.D. Business Administration, Stanford University, Graduate School of Business.
