Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management. This contribution marks an important investment in the future of the region, as it directly addresses financial barriers faced by many students and reinforces the school’s mission of expanding access to high-quality business education.

“One of the biggest challenges for local students is the ability to afford college,” says Arnold Ramirez ’20 MBA, Vida’s vice president of lending and compliance and one of several UCR alumni who work at Vida (formerly Ontario Montclair School Employees Federal Credit Union). “We have seen firsthand UCR’s impact on the lives and careers of the students from our region.

“We feel this scholarship is a valuable way to have long-term impact on the local community by providing support for students to advance in their educations, careers, and civic duties.”

Ramirez emphasizes that the scholarship represents more than a financial award. It is a commitment to supporting the educational pipeline in Inland Southern California and ensuring that talented students are able to pursue degrees without being constrained by financial pressures. The investment allows students to focus more fully on their studies, gain meaningful career experiences, and ultimately return to the community as leaders who are prepared to give back.

The scholarship is also an extension of the credit union’s long-standing values. Ramirez says the scholarship aligns with the credit union’s mission to encourage thrift, savings, and wise use of credit. Vida serves residents who live, work, worship, or attend school in San Bernardino County and caters to the specific needs of these members. By providing resources that ease financial strain, Vida continues its tradition of creating opportunities for growth and financial security among community members.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a faculty committee at the School of Business. Students who apply must either work or live in the San Bernardino County area, demonstrate financial need, and maintain good academic standing. These criteria ensure that the scholarship is awarded to individuals who are not only dedicated to their studies but who are also connected to the region Vida serves. The selection process highlights the shared mission between the university and the credit union: investing in local talent and ensuring that students can complete their degrees.

“Vida is always working to lower costs for our members within this community,” adds Ramirez, underscoring the parallel goal of the scholarship. “This scholarship helps lower the costs for UCR business students from our community.”

The establishment of this endowed scholarship reflects a meaningful partnership between the School of Business and a trusted community institution. It symbolizes how collaboration between higher education and local organizations can have a direct, measurable effect on students’ lives. For UCR, it represents an opportunity to further support students who show promise in academics and leadership but face economic obstacles. For Vida, it reinforces the organization’s identity as not only a financial institution but also a community partner dedicated to educational success.

As the first recipients of the Vida Federal Credit Union Endowed Scholarship are named in the coming years, their accomplishments will serve as a testament to the power of community investment. The scholarship is designed to last in perpetuity, ensuring that generation after generation of UCR business students will benefit from Vida’s generosity. In this way, the $50,000 gift represents more than a one-time contribution—it is a lasting legacy that connects the credit union, its alumni, and the broader Inland Southern California community to the university’s future.

Tags

scholarships

Thu, 06 Mar 2025 01:05:37 +0000 ilseu 2527 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu “We Want to Provide a ‘Hand Up’” https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/news/2025/01/09/ohana-scholarship-program “We Want to Provide a ‘Hand Up’” ilseu Thu, 01/09/2025 - 17:28 More News <picture> </picture> Laurie McLaughlin January 09, 2025
The Hawaiian word, “ohana,” means “family.”

“Strong family values are important to us, and our hope is to create and grow a family of students that learn from our support,” says a member of the family that anonymously established, in 2023, the University of California, Riverside Ohana Scholarship Program, which included four first-year students and four third-year students.

“We were inspired by a good friend who challenged us to find a way to give more. We know the path through college and a job search can be daunting, and we wanted to support and guide these students in a fun and helpful way to foster their growth, confidence, and development.”

The program provides scholarship assistance to low-income students majoring in pre-business or business administration and covers the financial gap that many low-income students experience, thus, reducing financial hardship.

Today, these eight undergraduates—the first in their families to attend college—are second- and fourth-year students. “We are on campus for a day each month working with four of the students, and then the next month, the other four, and at the end of the day, we have dinner with all eight,” says the family member. “We walk the campus; talk about how to play big in their classes, jobs, and internships; and visit various campus business clubs.”

The Ohana program also funds study abroad: In summer 2024, an Ohana Scholar spent a quarter in Barcelona, Spain, and several other scholars are exploring the possibility of international study in summer 2025.

“My husband and I met when I was studying overseas in college,” says the family member, who has personally led students to the campus study abroad office. “In our opinion, international study is such an eye-opening and memorable life experience, and our hope is that many of the scholars will eventually participate.”

With mentoring, dinners, and other activities, the family and the Ohana Scholars have come to really know each other and achieve a communal comfort level: “The first time we met the scholars, everyone was quite shy and quiet,” says the family member. “Now, with their university experience and their affiliation with the program, they are much more social, confident, and independent. We are so impressed with their growth in such a short time.”

As a nutritionist, the family member also offers complimentary health coaching services and has met individually with two students who accepted the service. “I help them work on their health and wellness goals, and I’ll continue to offer this service to interested students.”

The family is connected to UCR through a relative, who “worked so hard in his career at the university and made such a tremendous impact on his students. As a first-generation student himself, who came so far in his career, we thought creating a criterion to support first-generation business students would be an aspect of the scholarship that was meaningful to us,” adds the family member. “We want to provide a ‘hand up.’

“I tell others who want to help students that financial support is always helpful, but mentorship and offering a little bit of time in what you do well to help others will have a lasting and impactful effect on individuals.”

Tags

scholarships

Mon, 02 Oct 2023 18:13:49 +0000 clin246 2386 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu Two New Funds Champion Student Success https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/blog/2019/01/15/new-funds-student-success Two New Funds Champion Student Success kmcnally Tue, 01/15/2019 - 11:51 More Blog Posts January 15, 2019 Riverside, Ca
Two New Funds Established to Support Student Success

As of 2018, twenty-seven scholarship funds have been established by donors to champion student success, and over $132,000 was distributed in awards this year. These scholarships have become a crucial part of supporting the academic journeys of students at the School of Business. As a result of the enormous growth in support received from donors, alumni, and the greater community, the total amount of scholarship funds distributed has more than tripled from last year. This steady increase demonstrates the growing commitment of individuals and families who believe in the transformative power of education.

Two new scholarship funds were recently established by Executive Fellow, Beverly Bailey, and alumna, Jamie Fang. These endowments represent not only financial generosity but also personal dedication to ensuring that current and future students have the resources they need to thrive.

EXECUTIVE FELLOWS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Established by Beverly and Scott Bailey

Beverly and Scott Bailey created an endowed fund to provide scholarships to students enrolled in the UCR School of Business A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management programs. Beverly Bailey served as an Executive Fellow for the 2017–2018 academic year, bringing her professional experience and insights to students and faculty.

The Executive Fellows Endowed Scholarship Fund will be utilized to identify, recruit, and retain the best and brightest students to AGSM. Importantly, the fund ensures that financial need does not hinder the academic and professional development of talented individuals. It will also serve to recognize and reward excellence, including strong academic merit, leadership ability, and community engagement. By lowering financial barriers, the Baileys’ contribution creates opportunities for students who might otherwise struggle to pursue graduate education.

In reflecting on her experience as an Executive Fellow, Beverly Bailey emphasized the impact of engaging directly with students:
“I am forever grateful for the experience and opportunity to engage with the next generation of global leaders. Students of the School of Business are driven to become educated in not only what the experts say in the course texts but they’re also interested in real-life application. This is part of the joy of serving as an Executive Fellow. I believe that this multi-tiered approach to education involving this exchange and analysis of theory and practice is extremely important.”

Through this scholarship, the Baileys are ensuring that the spirit of mentorship and educational exchange continues to flourish long after her formal term as Executive Fellow has ended.

JAMIE CHEN-KUEI FANG ENDOWED AWARD
Established by Jamie Fang `90

Left to right: Sylvia Hu, Judy Su, Jamie Fang, Charlie Fang.

Jamie Fang `90 created the Jamie Chen-Kuei Fang Endowed Award fund to provide financial support to undergraduate business majors at the School of Business, particularly for incoming transfer students and those who have begun their educational journey at a Southern California community college. This focus reflects Fang’s belief in the importance of accessibility and inclusion in higher education.

In 2005, Jamie Fang also established the Charley Chen-Hui and Hsi Mei Fang Award Endowed Fund, further illustrating her long-term dedication to student success at UCR. Over the years, Fang has become a consistent and valued supporter of the university. Her commitment is rooted in the understanding that financial assistance can make the difference between a student struggling to meet basic costs and a student flourishing academically.

Jamie Fang has been a longtime friend and supporter of UCR and the School of Business. She is passionate about helping students achieve academic success by reducing their financial burden. These endowed awards ensure that deserving students can focus more fully on their studies, internships, and leadership opportunities without the constant worry of financial hardship.

Together, the generosity of Beverly and Scott Bailey and Jamie Fang expands the growing network of scholarship support that empowers students to succeed. Their contributions are a reflection of the values of the UCR School of Business — inclusivity, opportunity, and a commitment to preparing students to become the next generation of leaders in business and beyond.

Tags

scholarships

student success

giving

executive fellows

Beverly Bailey

Jamie Fang

Executive Fellows Program

<picture> </picture>
Share This
Tue, 15 Jan 2019 19:51:06 +0000 kmcnally 541 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu The Numbers Add Up https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/blog/2019/01/14/numbers-add The Numbers Add Up kmcnally Mon, 01/14/2019 - 15:28 More Blog Posts January 14, 2019 Riverside, Ca
The Numbers Add Up

There’s no arguing that Sheldon “Shel” Richman is a numbers guy. He was a tax partner at Deloitte, the professional services firm, for forty years.

For Shel, accounting was not just a profession — it was intellectually rewarding and deeply engaging. Through his work, he was able to learn about a wide variety of businesses in different industries, gaining insight into how organizations operate and make financial decisions. Along the way, he met fascinating people whose perspectives broadened his understanding of the business world. His career also gave him opportunities to travel internationally, expanding both his professional and cultural horizons. Beyond the professional benefits, his role provided a comfortable living for his family and helped set the foundation for future generations.

“We want others to have the educational opportunity to achieve professional results similar to mine,” notes Richman. “Our family is committed to the profession. My granddaughter is the fourth generation who has been licensed to practice public accounting in California. We appreciate the need to attract and educate qualified students who are the profession’s future.”

This strong belief in education and opportunity led to the creation of the Richman Family-Deloitte Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship in Accounting Endowed Fund at UCR in 2007. With the support of his wife, Judy, and their four children, and with a matching fund from Deloitte, Shel established a resource that would provide long-lasting benefits to students pursuing accounting. The scholarship represents both the Richmans’ family legacy and their commitment to nurturing the future of the profession.

The impact of this generosity has been deeply felt within the UCR School of Business. “I personally thank Shel and Judy for helping the School of Business reach new levels of excellence,” says Yunzeng Wang, Dean of the UCR School of Business. “Their ongoing generosity is providing tremendous opportunity for local, deserving students to learn and grow in a nationally-ranked business program.”

Each year, deserving students are given the opportunity to pursue their academic and professional goals thanks to the Richman Family-Deloitte Foundation Scholarship. One of this year’s recipients, first-year student Carol Chang, shares the Richmans’ love of the profession: “My favorite part is that when I learn accounting, most of what I’m learning will be applicable at my first job. Also, how simple it can be; like when I first learned about assets = liabilities + equity, it was actually straight forward how assets would be what the individual or company owns, liabilities would be what they owe to others, and equity would be subtracting assets from liabilities. I enjoy working with numbers.”

Carol’s reflection highlights the very purpose of the scholarship: to encourage students to embrace the field of accounting, develop confidence in their abilities, and prepare for impactful careers. Scholarships not only reduce financial barriers but also validate the hard work and dedication of students who are eager to join the profession. For many, the scholarship becomes both a financial relief and a motivating factor that propels them forward.

If the good vibes that come with helping a young person toward their career goals isn’t enough, Shel Richman does have a bit of extra advice for would-be donors: the gifts to establish a scholarship are tax deductible. His reminder reinforces the practicality of philanthropy — giving back can create meaningful change for students while also benefiting the donor.

The Richman family’s story is a powerful example of how personal passion, professional achievement, and generosity can intersect to leave a lasting legacy. By creating pathways for students to succeed, they are ensuring that the numbers continue to add up for future generations of accountants at UC Riverside.

Tags

giving

getting involved

scholarships

student success

<picture> </picture>
Share This
Mon, 14 Jan 2019 23:28:56 +0000 kmcnally 521 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu From Foster Care to MBA Guardian Scholar https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/blog/2019/01/09/foster-care-mba-scholarship From Foster Care to MBA Guardian Scholar kmcnally Wed, 01/09/2019 - 09:00 More Blog Posts January 09, 2019 Riverside, Ca
From Foster Care to the MBA Guardian Scholarship Recipient

The UCR journey of Brandy Renee Taylor ’13 continues with an inaugural School of Business scholarship

The two-day old baby needed a home. And foster parents.

Soon after she was born, Children and Family Services took Brandy Renee Taylor and her 2-year-old sister away from her drug-addicted mother. Her grandmother stepped in, along with the man she had just married six months earlier.

Bill and Dorothy Lockridge, both in their late 50s, parented the girls for nine years, but a family situation drove Children and Family Services into their family’s San Bernardino home, taking the girls into foster care. Both girls were in and out of the system for nearly four years.

After bouncing from foster home to foster home, Taylor made it back to her grandparents’ house. Her sister didn’t. In spite of the instability and the constant feelings of abandonment that still haunt her, Taylor graduated from the University of California, Riverside in 2013 with the support of UCR’s Guardian Scholars Program for foster youth. This fall, Taylor started a master’s in business administration, with a concentration in management and is the inaugural recipient of the UCR School of Business Guardian Scholarship for graduate students.

The scholarship covers tuition and fees, and the difference is subsidized by work-study teaching assistant appointments and a personal loan.

“I have been through a few challenges in my life, but with the support of this school and Guardian Scholars, I have achieved more than I ever thought I would. I’ve had so much love and support,” said Taylor, referring to UCR’s Guardian Scholars Program, which celebrated its 10thanniversary in November. The network is designed to support students transitioning from the foster care system into the university. It currently works with 150 students.

Taylor worked as an associate underwriter at a commercial insurance company for five years after graduating from UCR. She quit her job this fall and is now immersed in her MBA studies.

Supporting students such as Taylor in their educational trajectory is important for the mission of the School of Business, said Dean Yunzeng Wang.

“When they told me about Guardian Scholars, I was really touched,” Wang said. “These students have given it all they have to make it here. They are marvelous, and I think we have a responsibility to help them – and in turn help our society.”

At many levels, Wang can relate to Taylor and the other scholars. He grew up in rural Shandong Province, China, too poor to have shoes on his feet. He went off to college wearing his only good clothes, but managed to graduate and become the first in his family with a college degree.

“We are very proud to have Brandy in our program,” Wang said. “She’s a role model for others.”

Taylor is appreciative of the opportunity. She studies into the late hours and commutes from the Los Angeles area. Returning as a 28-year-old student means coming in with greater focus and dedication, although she made the Dean’s List as an undergrad and graduated with a 3.4 GPA.

She accomplished this while commuting to UCR daily from San Bernardino and acting as the full-time caregiver for the grandparents who raised her and who ensured she grew up to be respectful, kind, and have positive values. They dressed her in Goodwill outfits, put money in her pockets from the loose change they found between the couch cushions, and made her improve her spelling by using a dictionary.

As their caregiver, Taylor quickly learned how to cook, clean, pay bills, and to call a repairman when stuff broke around the house.

During her sophomore year at UCR, she lost both grandparents to pre-existing illnesses. The Guardian Scholars program offered her the emotional support a family would have typically provided during a time of loss.

Leading that support was Tuppett Yates, UCR professor of psychology and executive director of Guardian Scholars. The program is self-sustaining.

“Brandy is a risk-taker. She quieted her well-founded reservations about dangerous people and broken promises, to test the waters of our Guardian Scholars Program,” Yates said. “It is hard to convey the courage it takes for a student with a history of foster care to take those risks, to think about a future when their present is so uncertain, but our students do it each and every day.” Yates said.

Now, back in a graduate program, Taylor has a support system in place. Yates is only a phone call away, the School of Business is rooting for her success, as are Mary and Terry Schuler, a husband and wife duo who have a profound dedication to their alma mater and Guardian Scholars.

The Schulers encouraged Taylor to apply and walked her through the application process, explaining the financial aid package offered by the School of Business. The couple spent a recent Friday night at the annual Guardian Scholars Christmas dinner celebration – as they did when Taylor was an undergrad. At the dinner, organized by UCR faculty, staff, and community volunteers, students receive Christmas gifts and play white elephant.

“The scholarship from the business school is an incredible gift, but it, too, has required tremendous courage on Brandy’s part,” Yates said. “At the same time, the School of Business has taken its own risk to fund Brandy’s education. In all instances, these are risks with far-reaching benefits, and I look forward to seeing the rewards of this collaborative endeavor in the years to come.”

Taylor is loving the student setting again, noting the resources, labs, trainings, and study groups are all set up to make her cohort succeed. She plans to forge a career in human resources because all people deserve an opportunity to succeed, she said.

“I’m not an incredible person in any way, but I want to be able to tell, to share with people that ‘you can do it, that you have value, and to go for that job,’” Taylor said. “In life, you just have no option but to keep going.”

By Sandra Baltazar Martinez

Tags

scholarships

student spotlight

student success

<picture> </picture>
Share This
Wed, 09 Jan 2019 17:00:11 +0000 kmcnally 351 at https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu Scholarships Awarded to 52 Outstanding Students https://undergradbiz.ucr.edu/news/2018/10/25/scholarships-awarded-52-outstanding-students Scholarships Awarded to 52 Outstanding Students kmcnally Thu, 10/25/2018 - 09:15 More News October 25, 2018 Riverside, Ca
Scholarships Awarded to 52 Outstanding Business Students

The School of Business awarded scholarships to 52 outstanding undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students, in recognition of their academic excellence and promise as future business leaders.

At the annual Scholarships and Awards Dinner, held on October 18th, the School of Business celebrated the academic achievement of its 52 scholarship recipients, and recognized the generosity of the donors whose scholarship funds have made the dream of a top education a reality for so many students.

Twenty-seven scholarship funds have been established by donors to champion student success and over $132,000 was distributed in awards.
