In September 2023, UCSF launched GenAI Office Hours, led by Academic Research Services and the UCSF Versa Tiger Team. This bi-weekly series fosters community, knowledge sharing, and explores AI applications within UCSF’s diverse workflows. Presenters from the community generously share their experiences and use cases with GenAI tools. Participants span a broad spectrum of roles, including professors, leadership, IT support staff, researchers, educators, and clinical practitioners. Sessions cover varied topics like AI in clinical research, education, and administration, with attendance ranging from 80-200 participants, reflecting broad interest and engagement. Surveys reveal frequent use of GenAI tools in coding, content generation, email tasks, summarization, and patient care, highlighting their transformative impact on workflows. The GenAI Office Hours effectively build community and drive AI adoption, empowering the UCSF community to harness AI’s potential in their work.

Our team needed to integrate diverse data streams to dynamically identify patients at risk and proactively distribute tailored resources to empower them to protect their respiratory health. Our team needed to identify when high risk patients with respiratory conditions were experiencing poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke. We worked collaboratively with clinical subject matter experts (SME) to define the appropriate target patient population and air quality thresholds. Three wildfire MyChart letter templates were developed, each providing actionable recommendations, which was developed locally by SME’s. A Tableau Wildfire Alert Report was created and is linked to the Epic workbench reports. Occasional data inaccessibility from upstream sources (EPA, NASA) required process reruns. This pilot program demonstrated the potential of the wildfire alert system to improve patient care during wildfires, with future efforts focusing on optimizing the system's accuracy and scalability.

Large-scale wildfires can significantly contribute to poor air quality during active fire events through the release of various pollutants. Our patient population is directly affected by these wildfires and the increase in poor air quality, especially those diagnosed with Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This project sought to create an intelligent alert system using both internal (Electronic Health Record (Epic)) and external (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA)) data sources to support patients with respiratory conditions during wildfires. </div>

Achieving Zero Harm by preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is a priority for UC Health. The Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR) is the primary measure used by NHSN to risk-adjust HAIs, but access to protected health information (PHI) is restricted, limiting broad data accessibility. Additionally, no dynamic SIR data source existed in the Scuba Data Warehouse for enterprise reporting. To address this, we developed an automated tool, eliminating manual NHSN exports and processing. Using SQL and SAS, the predicted infections are calculated daily based on logistic or negative binomial regression models, then integrated into Scuba for enterprise-wide reporting. This solution saves 40 hours of manual effort monthly, improves access to timely SIR data, and supports key quality dashboards. Our organization is the first to accomplish this in the UC Health system. Next steps include applying this data source to additional dashboards and leveraging it for future AI-driven analytics.

Let's face it, getting tech updates to college students can feel like a superhero mission! This poster aims to present actionable strategies for effectively communicating technology and service changes to college students. It acknowledges the difficulties in reaching a tech-savvy but diverse student body and emphasizes the importance of clear, concise, and relevant messaging. The poster will also recommend using informal, fun language, with an example of a superhero theme, to engage students in short but meaningful interactions and capture their attention, making ITS seem less mysterious. The poster will also highlight the successful strategy of tabling during orientation, bringing the ITS department out to meet campus partners face-to-face.

Tired of the time-consuming process of crafting user stories? In this session, we'll explore how AI can revolutionize your user story development. We'll delve into real-world examples, like the "eFile Plus" project, where AI was successfully used to generate user stories, resulting in increased efficiency and improved project outcomes. Learn how AI can help you:
-Generate initial user stories quickly: Jumpstart your projects with AI-generated drafts, saving valuable time and effort.
-Improve user story quality: Refine AI-generated stories to ensure clarity, conciseness, and alignment with user needs.
-Empower your Agile team: Free up your team to focus on higher-level tasks like story refinement, acceptance criteria definition, and sprint planning.
-Streamline your workflow: Integrate AI tools into your existing Agile processes for a seamless transition.

This poster will highlight the impact of the APeX Enabled Research (AER) team on implementing clinical and technical innovations at UCSF. The poster will explain the primary goals of the team, volume of project work, and breadth of technologies used to support research innovation. Ideally UC Tech attendees will learn more about what is technically possible today to support research, get inspiration for projects at their organization, get connected with others doing similar work, and lead to future collaboration and innovation across UC campuses. The AER team has supported dozens of research implementations over the last six years and would love an opportunity to share our learnings with the UC Tech community.

When Turnitin’s AI Writing Detection Tool launched in Spring 2023, staff from UC Berkeley’s Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) department recognized the need for careful exploration of the tool to understand instructor concerns around academic integrity, accuracy, equity, privacy, student access, and actionability. In collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Student Conduct, RTL invited instructors to participate in an opt-in pilot from Fall 2023 – Spring 2025. The purpose of the pilot was to gain insights into instructor and student experiences in order to inform the question of campus-wide adoption of AI writing detection tools. This presentation will share the intentions and technical challenges behind the project, pilot evaluation results (including instructor usage, feedback, and recommendations), and provide space to discuss the nuanced challenges associated with AI tools for academic integrity.

This session will showcase how our department identifies, explores, and evaluates emerging technologies that support effective teaching and learning. Our department regularly pilots academic technology tools hosted by third-party vendors, so we developed a comprehensive guide to streamline and navigate through the piloting process. Join us as we walk through the guide, covering key aspects such as establishing scope, developing timelines and milestones, identifying risks and mitigations, creating a communications plan, conducting assessments, and defining success metrics.

We will share real examples, including project charters, evaluation surveys, and exploratory conversation templates used in successful pilots. Attendees will leave with practical insights on leveraging the guide to enhance their own pilot processes for tools and services for teaching and learning.
