This poster aims to present actionable strategies for effectively communicating technology and service changes to college students. It acknowledges the difficulties in reaching a tech-savvy but diverse student body and emphasizes the importance of clear, concise, and relevant messaging. The poster will also recommend using informal, fun language, with an example of a superhero theme, to engage students in short but meaningful interactions and capture their attention, making ITS seem less mysterious. The poster will also highlight the successful strategy of tabling during orientation, bringing the ITS department out to meet campus partners face-to-face.

What We Learned From the AI Detection Pilot at UC Berkeley kaylal Mon, 05/19/2025 - 23:16 When Turnitin’s AI Writing Detection Tool launched in Spring 2023, staff from UC Berkeley’s Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) department recognized the need for careful exploration of the tool to understand instructor concerns around academic integrity, accuracy, equity, privacy, student access, and actionability. In collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Center for Student Conduct, RTL invited instructors to participate in an opt-in pilot from Fall 2023 – Spring 2025. The purpose of the pilot was to gain insights into instructor and student experiences in order to inform the question of campus-wide adoption of AI writing detection tools. This presentation will share the intentions and technical challenges behind the project, pilot evaluation results (including instructor usage, feedback, and recommendations), and provide space to discuss the nuanced challenges associated with AI tools for academic integrity.

Catherine McChrystal

Learning Tools Team Lead at UC Berkeley

Catherine McChrystal (she/her) is the Learning Tools Team Lead in Research, Teaching, & Learning at UC Berkeley. In this role, she serves as the bCourses (Canvas LMS) admin, manages academic integrity tools, and influences the learning tools strategic roadmap. Prior to joining RTL, she was an instructional designer at UC Berkeley, worked for Google for Education, and managed the YouTube Trust & Safety training team. On campus, she is currently a co-chair for the UC Berkeley Instructional Design Community of Practice and is a co-founding member of the Filipinx Faculty & Staff Association. Off campus, Catherine loves to go hiking with her partner and their puppy (Dax!), works with her Oakland community organization, and is finishing up a Doctor of Education degree focused on Learning, Instruction, and Educational Technology.

Navigating the Pilot Process: Tools, Templates, and Best Practices kaylal Mon, 05/19/2025 - 23:15 This session will showcase how our department identifies, explores, and evaluates emerging technologies that support effective teaching and learning. Our department regularly pilots academic technology tools hosted by third-party vendors, so we developed a comprehensive guide to streamline and navigate through the piloting process. Join us as we walk through the guide, covering key aspects such as establishing scope, developing timelines and milestones, identifying risks and mitigations, creating a communications plan, conducting assessments, and defining success metrics. We will share real examples, including project charters, evaluation surveys, and exploratory conversation templates used in successful pilots. Attendees will leave with practical insights on leveraging the guide to enhance their own pilot processes for tools and services for teaching and learning.

Manager of Learning Environments and Tools at UC Berkeley

Allison leads the Learning Environments and Tools (LET) team within Research, Teaching, and Learning at UC Berkeley. LET manages and supports a portfolio of academic technologies including Canvas, Kaltura, lecture capture, Ally, Turnitin, the campus Jupyterhub instance, and course evaluations. Allison co-facilitates Canvas R1 Peers, a monthly working group that brings together 150+ to share best practices around using Canvas in support of teaching and learning. She is passionate about accessibility and creating initiatives that guide faculty in using edtech as the foundation for an engaging, equitable educational experience.

Using A Chatbot as an Instructional Design Tutor kaylal Mon, 05/19/2025 - 23:11 Our Instructional Design and Technology team was tasked with tracking learning objective achievement in Extension courses to support WASC accreditation. Canvas offers an "Outcomes" feature, but WASC also requires instructors to reflect on how their course design supports student success. While staff could help instructors brainstorm improvements, a more scalable method was needed. We developed a chatbot using Playlab, enabling instructors to input course titles and design elements they do or do not support (e.g., variety of assignments, social presence, use of media, rich feedback, real-world examples, collaboration, accessibility). The chatbot responds with strategies to improve teaching, assessment, or student engagement. Instructors then add their selected strategy to a checklist, which we track for WASC compliance. Afterward, they’re invited to learn how to build their own chatbots, promoting the integration of AI into teaching and learning at Extension.

Ann Kwinn

Director of Instructional Design and Quality Control at UC Riverside

Dr. Ann Kwinn is the Director of Instructional Design and Quality Control for UC Riverside Extension, overseeing the online learning function, pedagogy, instructor support and special projects such as promoting the use of AI in education. Prior to joining UCR, she was a faculty member and Director of Instructional Strategy for Azusa Pacific University. Ann is the co-author, with Ruth Clark, of the Pfeiffer book, The New Virtual Classroom, and has written numerous articles. She has developed and taught many courses for corporate and higher education settings and has spoken at many conferences. Ann holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Technology from the University of Southern California, was a research fellow at the Educational Testing Service and is on an advisory board for UC Irvine, Extension.

Connecting Dots: A novel approach to fusing data and campus community to drive student empowerment and success kaylal Mon, 05/19/2025 - 23:10 Spark is a pioneering homegrown web app that embraces an innovative approach to student success technology – one that empowers students with personalized behavioral analytics to make informed decisions about attaining their personal goals while improving access to campus services through data-driven targeting. This session will argue for the necessity of this approach in serving today's students at scale and fulfilling the promise of a university degree. We'll cover Spark's philosophy, design, and how the emergence of a collaborative campus data sharing culture was a prerequisite for its development. You’ll leave understanding how user-centered design, outreach, coalition building, governance, and an entrepreneurial approach to iteration can help overcome traditional barriers through collaboration, as they did for this innovative tool. While all are welcome, it is particularly relevant for product and project managers, IT and functional leaders, and those in the student success space.

Jeremy Thacker

Assistant Director for Educational & Student Success Technologies at UC Irvine

Jeremy is the Assistant Director for Educational & Student Success Technologies in the Office of Information Technology at UC Irvine. An Orange County native, he graduated from UCI with a BS in Information & Computer Science in 2006 but didn’t stay away long before returning in 2012 as a software engineer working on the campus' homebuilt learning management system. Over the years he has transitioned from software engineering through agile project management and team management roles. Today, he primarily focuses on introducing and managing web applications and reporting that support instruction and student success. Outside of his work in the Office of Information Technology, Jeremy has been a Staff Assembly volunteer for 12 years and currently serves as the Operations Officer for the Council of UC Staff Assemblies. In his down time, he can usually be found playing video games, exercising, or dining out with friends.

It takes advantage of the recent advent of a centralized student data warehouse and uses institutional data in a novel way to provide students with targeted campus services and analytics about their own behaviors. The session will discuss the enablers of this new technology as well as the design and project management practices that helped it overcome the challenges that any novel project faces. While this is clearly an innovative technology, it is also most relevant to the Student Success space as an approach to student care.
