Achieving Zero Harm by preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is a priority for UC Health. The Standardized Infection Ratio (SIR) is the primary measure used by NHSN to risk-adjust HAIs, but access to protected health information (PHI) is restricted, limiting broad data accessibility. Additionally, no dynamic SIR data source existed in the Scuba Data Warehouse for enterprise reporting. To address this, we developed an automated tool, eliminating manual NHSN exports and processing. Using SQL and SAS, the predicted infections are calculated daily based on logistic or negative binomial regression models, then integrated into Scuba for enterprise-wide reporting. This solution saves 40 hours of manual effort monthly, improves access to timely SIR data, and supports key quality dashboards. Our organization is the first to accomplish this in the UC Health system. Next steps include applying this data source to additional dashboards and leveraging it for future AI-driven analytics.

In response to a directive, the Nursing Informatics and Salesforce engineering team developed a robust Digital Rounding Utility (DRU) to replace the existing patient experience tool. The project aimed to create a more efficient and integrated system to enhance patient care and streamline operations. Remarkably, within 60 days, we designed, built, and launched the initial version of DRU, featuring basic functionality, manual processes, and minimal reporting capabilities. Since its inception, DRU has evolved through several iterations into a comprehensive platform that integrates seamlessly with multiple hospital systems. Key integrations include the electronic health records (EHR) system, a survey tool, a customer relationship management (CRM) system, and a ticketing maintenance and facilities tool. Ongoing iterations are incorporating AI and an improved user interface to better support frontline staff.

With Master’s degrees in Nursing and Geology, she combines scientific and technological expertise in her role. Amy has 20 years of experience as a registered nurse and clinical nurse specialist, board certified in nursing informatics for nine years, and has been active in this field since 2007. Her journey began with a strong foundation in science and technology from her career as a geologist. Driven by a passion for midwifery, she returned to academia to pursue nursing, though life steered her toward healthcare technology. Amy’s clinical experience started in obstetrics as a labor and delivery nurse. Initially, she focused solely on nursing, keeping her tech skills hidden. Her desire to help colleagues with computer malfunctions, EHR documentation, and data issues soon surfaced. Now, as a Clinical Nurse Informaticist at UCSF, Amy analyzes nursing workflows, implements technology, and educates staff to enhance patient care. She aims to reduce workflow burdens, increase nurse satisfaction, and improve patient experiences.

Although developed at UCSF Health, this topic is especially relevant for the Innovation and Emerging Technologies track at UC Tech. Innovation isn’t just about new ideas; it’s about simplifying complexity through effective design and integration. Our Digital Rounding Utility (DRU) exemplifies this by providing a streamlined user experience despite its intricate integrations with EHR, CRM, and maintenance tools. Additionally, we created a custom mascot, affectionately called DRU, to help promote the tool and engage users. Attendees will gain insights into agile development methodologies and the significance of iterative improvements for creating effective healthcare solutions. This project underscores the vital role of system integration in enhancing patient care and operational efficiency in healthcare environments.
UC San Diego Health is reimagining how healthcare systems operate by integrating artificial intelligence, automation, and real-time dashboards to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and support high reliability. This session shares how our Clinical Quality Improvement and Patient Safety teams partnered with data and technology experts to streamline manual processes—such as quality measure abstraction and CMS reporting—through the use of large language models and smart dashboards. Attendees will gain practical insights into how these tools were implemented, how change was managed across clinical and IT teams, and the measurable outcomes that followed. This is a real-world case study in transforming complexity into clarity, and data into action.

Victor Galvez is Director of Integration, Data Platforms, and AI at UCSF. He leads enterprise integration, analytics infrastructure, and UCSF’s internal generative AI platform, UCSF Versa. With over 20 years in healthcare IT, he oversees real-time data exchange, data warehousing, and secure AI deployments that support UCSF’s clinical, research, and education missions. Victor played a key role in launching UCSF Versa, which enables UCSF users to safely leverage AI for productivity, automation, and decision support. He is focused on building scalable, compliant, and mission-aligned technologies across the UC system.

Session Track Reasoning

Developing and scaling generative AI tools across all mission areas of a healthcare, research, and educational UC requires continuous adapting to once in a generation speed technological landscape. Transformationally powerful new AI technologies are released on a monthly basis, requiring rapid adaptation and unquenchable user demand. When every aspect of what the team is building is new, this sits squarely in the Innovation track but is also a new way of building scalable Systems and Solutions in a rapidly changing landscape.

ChatGSPP is an AI-powered chatbot developed by the Goldman School of Public Policy that intelligently navigates information about our faculty, staff, programs, and research initiatives. This interactive demo will showcase how we've implemented a conversational interface that analyzes user queries, retrieves appropriate content from our existing web resources, and delivers responses with proper source attribution. The session will demonstrate how the chatbot serves diverse stakeholders including prospective students, policy professionals, researchers, and policymakers seeking to engage with our institution. Learn about our technical architecture, implementation challenges, and how this tool has enhanced user experience by making complex academic information more accessible through AI-assisted navigation.
