PPAC Ambassador Ivan Romero Awarded $10,000 Nike Scholarship

Ivan Romero

Ivan Romero, a biological science major set to graduate in Spring 2026, has been awarded a prestigious $10,000 Nike Scholarship. A first-generation college student from Long Beach, California, Romero was selected for his academic excellence, resilience, and commitment to addressing healthcare disparities in underserved communities.

For Romero, this scholarship is more than just financial aid; it is a validation of a journey defined by perseverance. Growing up in a low-income household shared by up to 12 relatives, Romero witnessed firsthand the lack of healthcare resources available to his community.
“I have experienced the effects of violence, substance use, and domestic violence both within my own home and throughout my community,” Romero shared. “These experiences deeply shaped who I am today and continue to fuel my long-term goal of entering medicine so I can advocate for underserved communities.”

Each academic quarter, Romero faces the challenge to secure financial aid to cover his tuition and various educational expenses. This particular opportunity with Nike offered and opportunity for Romero to further his educator, while creating long-term opportunities for himself and his family. “The scholarship supports students who attend Hispanic-Serving Institutions like myself and care committed to advancing their education despite financial barriers,” Romero said.

A Vision for Health Equity

Romero’s path is clear. Following graduation, he plans to dedicate himself to MCAT preparation with the goal of entering medical school. His long-term ambition is to complete an internal medicine residency and specialize in cardiology, joining the small percentage of Hispanic physicians working to improve health outcomes for diverse populations.

Leadership at UCR

Central to Romero’s success has been his involvement with the Pre-Professional Advising Center (PPAC) at the University of California, Riverside. Describing the center as one of the "most meaningful parts" of his undergraduate journey, Romero now serves as a mentor to other students who aspire to medical careers but lack the network or knowledge to navigate the path.
“One of my main goals is to give back to students who were once in the same position as me,” Romero said. “PPAC is a place where curiosity is nurtured... it has given me values such as empathy, patience, and accountability that I will carry with me into medicine.”

A Family First

The award marks a significant milestone for Romero’s family—it is the first time they have ever received an opportunity of this magnitude.

“This scholarship means so much to me and my family,” Romero noted in his acceptance. “It is not only a tremendous honor, but also a meaningful investment in my future.”

Romero extends his gratitude to Nike, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and his mentors at UCR for believing in his potential to lead and serve.
