Routledge Taylor & Francis Group -

This research article seeks to uncover the relationship between types of custody and program participation on perception of the employability of former offenders. The study utilized experimental methods in which participants were randomly assigned one of six conditions with manipulations in terms of custody types and program participation. Participants were asked to role-play as an employer and indicate their inclination to hire an applicant based on their description. Findings suggest that applicants that participated in the vocational program are more employable than those who did not. Additionally, custody type does not have a direct effect on employability. Jessica Cerda is a counselor at Los Angeles City College. She assists students experiencing academic difficulties, probation and academic dismissal. Douglas M. Stenstrom is a professor of psychology at the California State University of Los Angeles. Mathew Curtis is a clinical associate professor of communication at the University of Southern California

This report conveys the best practices in regards to the academic and vocational education for offenders in state facilities. The report does not describe its methodology, but rather provides a citation for a methodology guide by the National Institute of Justice: CrimeSolutions.gov. The text concludes with the notion that correctional programs often lack scientific rigor to prove their effectiveness, however, this can be improved if policymakers provide more funding. The National Institute of Justice is the research, development, and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. NIJ’s mission is to advance scientific research, development, and evaluation to enhance the administration of justice and public safety.

26 recidivism reduction programs across the country are assessed using the California Program Assessment Process (CPAP) to determine the extent to which they implement evidence-based programming. Report emphasizes CPAP ratings are an accentuation of the importance of evidence based design of individual recidivism impacting programs as opposed to actually reducing recidivism in California.

Office of Justice Programs -

Report on the impact of Second Chance Act (SCA) programs and an evaluation of whether such programs reduce recidivism and increase employment. Study randomly assigned 966 adult offenders in 4 counties and 3 different states to re-entry program treatment or control groups with recidivism and employment measured at 18 and 30 months. Study found no reduction in recidivism rate for either group, but an increase in employment and earnings for those assigned to the treatment. Report suggests results could be improved with additional funding to counties.

The Office of Justice Programs provides federal leadership in developing the nation’s capacity to prevent and control crime, administer justice, and assist crime victims.

A report on the California state prison education system, which suggests that having incarcerated people taking college classes reduces recidivism. Study uses statistics from RAND to argue recidivism rates of inmates who receive college education are cut in half. Report claims funding for college education programs in prison is a solution to continue reducing recidivism.

A report on recidivism reduction programs that could reduce the cost of crime through education and re-entry programs addressing mental health problems. Data describes programs addressing mental health as having more impact on reducing cost and future crime, while data supporting education programs is too incomplete to recognize any returns on investing. Study shows increased research evidence is necessary before future investment to reduce recidivism as a whole.
