Less frequently discussed, however, are the cognitive benefits that bilingualism offers to speakers.<\/p>\n<p>According to the University of California, Riverside\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psych.ucr.edu\/faculty\/kroll\/index.html\">Judith Kroll<\/a>, distinguished professor of psychology and director of UCR\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/bilingualismmindbrain.com\/\">Bilingualism, Mind, and Brain Lab<\/a>, bilingualism\u2019s consequences are evident over the entire life span. People who can speak more than one language develop \u201cmental flexibility\u201d that increases openness to new learning, while code-switching, the practice of alternating between multiple languages in a single conversation, becomes an act of cognitive athleticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the most dramatic consequences are seen in older adults,\u201d Kroll said. \u201cStudies show that while bilingualism doesn\u2019t protect people against dementia or Alzheimer\u2019s disease, it does seem to protect them against the onset of the symptoms.
