In this talk, Dr. Rodrigo Sigal presents a range of creative and technical strategies for

composing electroacoustic music, with a focus on mixed and acousmatic formats. Drawing on

his experience as director of CMMAS, he will demonstrate methods for shaping timbre,

structuring processes, and articulating sound in space. Through musical examples and visual

tools, the presentation will explore how technology becomes an integral partner in the

compositional act.

Film Screening with Original Soundtrack by Rodrigo Sigal

UC Riverside’s Department of Music presents a special screening of ¡Que Viva Mexico!, Sergei Eisenstein’s iconic, unfinished film project, accompanied by an original soundtrack composed by Rodrigo Sigal and commissioned by UC Riverside.

Although Eisenstein (1898–1948) never completed the film, an edited version of his original footage was released in 1979 and has since become a landmark in film history. ¡Que Viva Mexico! is emblematic of Eisenstein’s transnational aesthetic vision and of a broader historical shift—from the sensory experimentation of modern art to the mass mediation of perception in global culture.

Rodrigo Sigal’s newly composed soundtrack approaches the film from two complementary perspectives. First, he assigns distinct timbral motives to the film’s characters, forging a close identity between image and sound. Second, he structures the music through the film’s visual layers, allowing cinematic montage to inform musical segmentation. The score integrates prehispanic instruments, materials from the 1979 soundtrack, and electroacoustic elements, creating a rich dialogue between past and present.

Commissioned by UC Riverside in 2021, this work offers a powerful reimagining of a silent-film classic and resonates with themes of Mexican cultural history and ritual, including connections to Día de los Muertos and other festive traditions.

Jorge Rodrigo Sigal Sefchovich (Mexico City, 1971) is a composer, cultural organizer, and professor of Music and Artistic Technologies at the National School of Higher Studies (ENES), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Morelia, where he co-founded the undergraduate program in Music and Artistic Technologies. His work focuses on electroacoustic music and the creative use of new technologies.

Since 2006, Sigal has served as Director of the Mexican Center for Music and Sonic Arts (CMMAS), leading national and international initiatives in artistic creation, education, research, and cultural management in sound and music. In 2024, he received the Bellas Artes Medal in Music from Mexico’s National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL).

Sigal holds a PhD from City University of London, completed postdoctoral research at UNAM, and has received numerous fellowships and grants, including Fulbright, FONCA, and support from UNAM and the DeVos Institute for Cultural Management. He is a Level I member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers (CONACYT). For over two decades, he has been a member of the interdisciplinary collective Lumínico, is the director of the Visiones Sonoras Festival, and serves as editor of the journal Ideas Sónicas.

This talk begins by thinking with Toni Morrison's novel, Beloved, and her notion of a “too thick” love. Too thick feeling is a racially gendered problem for affect theory, one that not only exposes the latter's residual humanisms but that opens onto the possibility of thinking with the minor affective registers of Black existence. Highlighting the conjunction between Black critiques of humanism and those repertoires of wayward feeling that subtend Black existence, this talk argues that too thick feeling moves us through the undertheorized racially gendered declensions and transfigurations within registers of feeling such as slowness, exhaustion, bitterness, and perseverance. Moving between Beloved and Charles Burnett's 1978 film Killer of Sheep, this talk suggests that this indeterminate genre of feeling emerges precisely through its immanent exposure to and subjection before an anti-Black world that demands but cannot abide its intelligibility.

Rizvana Bradley is Associate Professor of Film and Media and Affiliated Faculty in the History of Art and the Center for Race and Gender at the University of California, Berkeley. Bradley has been named the John Grace Memorial Philosopher in Residence at the University of British Columbia. She was the 2023–24 Terra Foundation for American Art Visiting Professor at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. Bradley is the author of Anteaesthetics: Black Aesthesis and the Critique of Form (Stanford University Press, 2023), shortlisted for the 2024 MLA Prize for a First Book and named one of the Top Books of 2023 by FRIEZE. The book was a recipient of the Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Bradley’s work examines modern and contemporary art, film and digital media, and literature through critical interrogations of aesthetic theory, Continental philosophy, and art history in order to rethink the stakes of and methods for the interpretation of aesthetic forms.

Her scholarship has appeared in Diacritics: A Review of Contemporary Criticism, Film-Philosophy, TDR: The Drama Review, Discourse: Journal for Theoretical Studies in Media and Culture, Rhizomes: Cultural Studies in Emerging Knowledge, Black Camera: An International Film Journal, Film Quarterly, and Women and Performance: A Journal of Feminist Theory. She serves on the advisory boards of October and Camera Obscura. Bradley’s art criticism has been published in The Yale Review, Artforum, e-flux, Art in America, and Parkett, as well as numerous exhibition catalogs, including for the Serpentine Galleries, the New Museum, Whitechapel Gallery, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, and the Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art. Her work has been translated into four languages.

Bradley has curated a number of academic arts symposia, including events at the British Film Institute, London, the Serpentine Galleries, London, the Stedelijk Museum of Art, Amsterdam, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York.

Her work has been supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Terra Foundation for American Art, Creative Capital, and the Andy Warhol Foundation. In 2025, Bradley delivered the annual J. Fred Weintz and Rosemary Weintz Lecture in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University. She has been invited to give keynotes at the Documenta Institut, Jeu de Paume, Kunstmuseum Basel, the University of Amsterdam, Rhode Island School of Design, Tate Britain, Modern Art Oxford, Utrecht University, and the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac. Bradley has also served as a visiting critic at the Yale School of Art, the Ruskin School of Art at the University of Oxford, and was most recently a critic and theorist in residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is on the advisory board of the Centre for Culture and Technology at the University of Toronto.

Before coming to UC Berkeley, Bradley was an Assistant Professor in the History of Art and African American Studies at Yale, an Assistant Professor of Women's, Gender and Sexuality at Emory University, and a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of the History of Art at the University College London. She holds a BA from Williams College and a PhD from Duke University, and was a Helena Rubinstein Critical Studies Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

In 1476, famine and unrest grip a fragile Spain newly united under Isabella and Ferdinand, even as King Alfonso of Portugal presses his claim. With the Knights of Calatrava wavering in loyalty, the fledgling kingdom teeters on the edge of civil war.

Please be advised that this production includes atmospheric smoke and loud sound effects, and contains some strong language, historic negative depictions of Moorish people and cultures, references to war, adult themes, sexual and tense situations, and scenes of violence.

The performance length is approximately 100 minutes, with no intermission.

In 1476, famine and unrest grip a fragile Spain newly united under Isabella and Ferdinand, even as King Alfonso of Portugal presses his claim. With the Knights of Calatrava wavering in loyalty, the fledgling kingdom teeters on the edge of civil war.

Participants will assist with weeding and watering planting sites established last fall by local college students and community members.

What to Bring/Wear:

All volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes (such as sneakers or boots)Long sleeves, hat, and sunblock are recommendedPlease bring water and any snacks you might need We will provide all necessary supplies for the event (you are welcome to bring your own gloves if you prefer)

Kuang P'ing - Guang Ping Mirror Form (1/25)
This Older Traditional Style of t’ai chi ch’uan was taught to Harvey Kurland by Kuo Lien Ying who brought this style to America. Kurland is one of the few remaining first generation students of Kuo. This form is said to be originally taught by Yang Ban-hou, son of the founder of Yang style, Yang Lu-chan, both being martial art instructors for the Imperial Guards. We will work on the original version taught by Kuo. If time allows we will also work on the Mirror version.

T'ai chi Tao - Taiji Tao Broadsword (2/22)
T'ai chi Broadsword is one of the major weapons practice in the art of t'ai chi ch'uan. A single edged sword. The form taught is the Yang Tchoung style broadsword. Review and continuation. Chicano Student Programs in collaboration with the UCR Library is hosting our fourth annual archive and collective memory exhibit for our annual Semana de la Mujer 2026 program! The exhibit will be on the first floor of the Tomás Rivera Library for the entire month of March (Women's History Month), and will highlight and honor UCR Chicana/Latina femmes and mujeres/femmes in our lives who have shaped us.

During the Semana de la Mujer program, we will launch the exhibit with a Collective Memory Exhibit Reception on Monday, February 23rd from 12pm-2:30pm. The event will be on the 1st floor of the Tomás Rivera Library. The reception welcomes the public to learn more about the herstories of the collective memory submissions.

All are encouraged to attend. The event is open to the public and free.

Designed for adults with little to no swimming experience, this class focuses on fundamental water safety skills, basic swim techniques, and comfort in the pool environment. Participants will learn to float, glide, and kick while developing proper breathing techniques and coordination.

With patient, certified instructors and a supportive atmosphere, you'll progress at your own pace while gaining the skills needed to enjoy swimming safely and confidently. Join us to take the first step towards a lifetime of aquatic enjoyment!

When: February 9 - February 26
* Due to the Presidents Day facility closure on February 19, Monday, March 2 will serve as the make-up day for the missed Monday session.

Who it's for: Adults who are new to swimming or seeking foundational water skills.
What to bring: Comfortable swimwear, a towel, and optional swim cap or goggles.
Duration: 30 minutes per session, twice a week for 3 weeks.

Lilian Mengesha

This talk will detail insights from Dr. Mengesha’s new book Critical Dreaming: Feminist Performances Across the Indigenous Americas, which is a transnational study of Indigenous artists that stages the urgency of embodied ways of knowing amidst the colonial decimation of culture, life, and land. In the 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and US and Canadian boarding/residential schools’ practices led to an increase in cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women from the US-Mexico border, Guatemala, Canada, and the United States. Indigenous artists aiming to recontextualize these state-sponsored instances of violence created works grappling with time, ancestry, and relationality. Dr. Mengesha interprets the works of these artists’ Indigenous contexts through an aesthetic frame she calls “critical dreaming.”

Using methods from performance studies, gender studies, and Indigenous studies, Critical Dreaming considers artists as expert world makers. Dr. Mengesha examines selected works by Lara Kramer, Regina José Galindo, Rebecca Belmore, Monique Mojica, LeAnne Howe, and Sky Hopinka, demonstrating how each materializes alternative modes of experiencing time, making kin, and communing with land. Revealing the long and interconnected patterns of feminicide across the Americas, the talk will detail how contemporary feminist artists use performance to sustain life amid devastating attempts at extermination.

Lilian Mengesha is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies, and Affiliate faculty in the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism and Diaspora at Tufts University which occupies Massachusett and Nipmuc territories. Her research and teaching live at the intersection of critical Indigenous studies, gender and sexuality studies and performance studies. Her talk will draw from her first book, Critical Dreaming: Feminist Performances Across the Indigenous Americas (NYU Press, 2025). You can find her other writing in the Journal for Dramatic Theory and Criticism, ASAP Journal, Canadian Theatre Review and The Drama Review. In addition to research and teaching, Dr. Mengesha is a director and dramaturge for experimental performance and new works.

In the Hour of Chaos: Hip Hop Art & Activism with Public Enemy’s Chuck D highlights the transformative power of Hip Hop with some of the nation’s most insightful thinkers on the art form’s social, cultural, and political significance. Guided by Chuck D himself, the film tells the story of how artists, activists, and academics came together at UCLA to celebrate 50 years of Hip Hop cultural history. The all-star line-up of guests explores the profound impact of an arts movement that revolutionized the world.

Over much of the last 4 decades, Chuck D’s music and activism have taught so many of us. This film captures Chuck D at his best, engaging some of the nation’s leading public intellectuals on the social origins of Hip Hop culture and its continued evolution. The film covers a range of topics, including Black radical movements, Hip Hop feminisms, and the global circulation of the culture within the ever-evolving music and entertainment industries. Narrated by Chuck D, this film follows his tenure as the UCLA Hip Hop Initiative’s inaugural Artist-in-Residence. No other film captures this journey, at this critical juncture in our history, as we celebrate over half a century of Hip Hop with one of its most important and globally-recognized voices. And no other artist speaks so powerfully and eloquently about Hip Hop’s continued relevance in today’s “hour of chaos.”

Our Level 1 Adult Swim Lessons are perfect for beginners looking to build confidence in the water. Designed for adults with little to no swimming experience, this class focuses on fundamental water safety skills, basic swim techniques, and comfort in the pool environment. Participants will learn to float, glide, and kick while developing proper breathing techniques and coordination.

With patient, certified instructors and a supportive atmosphere, you'll progress at your own pace while gaining the skills needed to enjoy swimming safely and confidently. Join us to take the first step towards a lifetime of aquatic enjoyment!

Saving Turfgrass in California and the Southwest.
In a region with increasing population, temperature, and drought, and consequential declining water resources, turfgrass is often the primary target for removal or even prohibition from the landscape. Dr. Baird will set the record straight about the functional, aesthetic, and environmental benefits of turfgrass including providing tips for water conservation on lawns and landscapes. Most notably, he will highlight the UCR Turfgrass Breeding & Genetics program that is making significant strides towards developing turfgrasses with improved drought resistance.

About Dr. Jim Baird
Jim Baird has been the Turfgrass Specialist at UCR since 2008. His primary responsibilities include conducting research and providing outreach for the California turfgrass industry. Jim was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado. He received a B.S. in Landscape Horticulture in 1985 from Colorado State University, a M.S. in Agronomy & Soils in 1989 and a Ph.D. in Botany in 1993, both from Auburn University. Prior to UCR, Jim was an Assistant Professor of Turfgrass Research & Teaching at Oklahoma State and Michigan State Universities, and an Agronomist in the Northeast Region for the United States Golf Association Green Section.

Description
Cancer is primarily a disease of old age, so an increase in cancer risk is an unwelcome side-effect of the benefit of living longer. But beyond this trade-off, an important but largely unanswered question is how much of our cancer risk earlier in life is due to our environment, our genes, or simply bad luck. I have been looking at this problem from the perspective of an evolutionary biologist, by first arguing (and then demonstrating) that the ability of animals to reduce the risk of cancer is an evolving trait, and then using this knowledge to identify specific human cancers that appear to have become markedly more common because of our modern way of life.

Speakers:

Lenard Smith (b. 1975) is a first-generation Ghanaian-American artist and educator based in Los Angeles. He has published eight artist books, including Refuge (Perimeter Editions, 2024), and Melancholy Objects (Perimeter Editions, 2022). Smith’s work is in the collections of LACMA and Getty Research Institute, among others. He earned his MFA from Bard College and he was a MacDowell Fellow in 2024. Smith was a visiting assistant professor at UCR in 2023-25, and is currently art faculty at USC.

Rebecca Morse is Curator in the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Recent projects include Ed Ruscha: Now Then, Objects of Desire: Photography and the Language of Advertising, Barbara Kruger: Thinking of You I Mean Me I Mean You, among others. She was previously Associate Curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). Upcoming projects include Laura Gilpin: Photographer of the West.

Kathryn Poindexter-Akers is Head of Exhibitions at UCR ARTS, where she has curated numerous exhibitions, including Shadow Archive: Meggan Gould (2025); Fictive Kin: Sarah Conaway, Annette Kelm, Kim Schoen (2017); and Aaron Siskind: Pleasures and Terrors (2015). Her writing has been published in Contemporary Art Reviews Los Angeles and elsewhere. Poindexter-Akers earned her MA in Art History at the University of Southern California (USC) and earned her BA in Studio Art from UC Irvine.

Mlondi Zondi

Faustin Linyekula’s performance practice addresses historical violence and the violence of History. Sustained in his inquiry is an effort to recover absented maternal heritage. To what extent does the recognition of this absented (maternal) knowledge reveal “truth” and transmit memory beyond the document, and how far does this recovery through performance reconsign African immaterial heritage into the logic of the archive? What kind of philosophy of history emerges through contemporary African dance?

Mlondi Zondi (they/he) is an assistant professor of global Black studies in comparative literature at the University of Southern California. They hold a PhD in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and an MFA in Dance from UC Irvine. Zondi is currently working on a monograph entitled Unmournable Void: Figuration, Violence, and Corporeal Integrity in Contemporary African (Diaspora) Expressive Arts. Forthcoming or published essays by Zondi appear in TDR: The Drama Review, ASAP Journal, Contemporary Literature, Espace Art Actuel, Liquid Blackness, Mortality, Performance Philosophy, and Safundi. In addition to scholarly research, Zondi practices performance and dramaturgy.

Germany, 1917. A lone woman. A bottle of poison. A momentous decision…

In a deserted circus, drama, humour, music and songs tell the true story of actress Tilly Wedekind and her controlling, famous writer-husband, Frank Wedekind (Spring Awakening). When Frank robs Tilly of her acting roles he reduces her to a Nobody. Broken-hearted, she swallows poison. But following her recovery, she reclaims her career, discovers her voice, and as an 80-year-old woman she finally writes her own story. Tilly No-Body becomes a Somebody.

This internationally acclaimed, tour-de-force performance about sex and love, transformation and identity asks: Why do we stay in relationships long after they’ve turned toxic? How can we find our voices after we’ve been silenced? Can sharing our stories help us reshape our lives?

Award-winning actor and writer Bella Merlin brings her previous experience of a violent relationship: “Tilly’s resilience came through writing her own story – mine has come through playing her. It became a way of saying we can get through this, we can survive.”

BODY-WORD-VOICE is a practice-as-research initiative led by Drs. Annika Speer and Bella Merlin, funded by SoCal/OASIS/Office of Research and Economic Development. We use theatrical performance, actor-training skills, and public-speaking techniques as a means of listening to the body, finding words for the embodied information, and giving voice to those words. We explore creative frameworks and mindful practices for navigating complex emotions through shared storytelling, witnessing and listening.

Consuming Citizens offers a fresh conception of twentieth-century Mexican cultural production by critically tracing the underside of mestizo modernity. Examining a diverse corpus that includes poetry, song, avant-garde film, and more from the 1920s to '80s, the volume uses queer, feminist, and psychedelic theories to understand counterculture-and especially different acts of consumption-as a way of creating culture and alternative social structures. Practices of consuming media, sex, and drugs become means of generating community among subjects who have been marginalized by the nominally inclusive mestizo nation. Consuming Citizens thus rethinks nationalism, citizenship, and society in relation to, and as creations of, countercultural bodies.

About Iván Eusebio Aguirre Darancou: Associate Professor Iván Eusebio Aguirre Darancou received their Ph.D. from the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis in May of 2017 and has been at UCR in the department of Hispanic Studies since then. Their fields of interest include Latin American literature and culture (emphasis on Mexico), critical theory, film and media studies, queer theory, ethics, and countercultural studies.

About Rocío Pichón-Riviere: Rocío Pichon-Rivière is a scholar, artist, and educator. She is a philosopher by training and her scholarship proposes an archive and intellectual history of marginalized thinkers and the role of alternative media in the dissemination of transformative ideas. She writes about trans/queer theory, comics, vernacular phenomenology, intersectional feminism, health humanities, and restorative justice. She is an assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese and founding director of the Graphic Narratives Research Cluster at UC Irvine, School of Humanities. She is also a member of the Graphic Medicine International Collective Board of Directors.

Unsettling and Unbuilding

Melissa Melpignano

What does it mean to conceive the body as “home” in choreography when the historical and political reality of “home” for the performers signals dispossession, military control, and violence? This talk looks at political conceptualizations of “home” in Palestine-Israel through the choreography and performance of four solo works by Hadar Ahuvia (Israeli-American based between Boston and NYC), Leila Awadallah (Palestinian-American based in Minneapolis), Yasmeen Godder (Israeli based in Jaffa), and Farah Saleh (Palestinian from Ramallah based in Scotland).

Saleh’s What My Body Can/t Remember (2019) is the fourth part of the project Archive of Gestures, started in 2014. Godder’s Practicing Empathy #3 (2022) is the second-to-last part of a multiyear series on empathy started in 2014. These two solos stem from experiences of forced home confinement, differently motivated: military curfew for the former, pandemic lockdown for the latter. In contrast, nefesh (2024), a solo that has also been presented as a duet, explores Ahuvia’s reconnection to a pre-Zionist Ashkenazi Jewish spirituality. In YISSH (Yalla Imshi, Shway Shway Habibi), a solo presented in various iterations between 2019 and 2024, Awadallah reconnects to her Palestinian roots and the Palestinian people while immersed in the American political system. In these latter two works, the body reclaims an imagined ancestral connection and moves to rematerialize an erasure.

While the metaphor of “body as home” has been used in dance practice and scholarship to signal embodied agency, somatic refuge, or kinesthetic belonging, these four solo works expose the limits of this metaphor when the very notion of home is unsettled by historical and ongoing violence and territorial contestation. The individual political investments and trajectories of each choreographer nuance and differentiate their approaches to this shared epistemic problem of “home.”

My analysis draws on the framework I am developing in my book manuscript Unsettling Choreographies: Dancing Livability in Palestine-Israel, where I examine how choreographic practice undoes settler colonial paradigms. In this paper, I argue that Godder and Ahuvia, in their specific ways, engage in nation-unbuilding from the rubble of the ongoing Nakba, while Saleh and Awadallah unsettle the political restrictions imposed on Palestinian bodies by moving through the ruins of a history that keeps unfolding. I will specify the differences between rubble and ruins, both conceptually and choreographically, and situate my analysis in relation to recent scholarship on Palestine and Israel in dance studies. Moreover, I will problematize the notion of “home” in this specific context, considering it not only epistemically but in the material terms of architecture, urban planning, and land governance.

This talk also offers an opportunity to discuss the relationship between dance studies and MENA studies, and the contributions that choreographic and performance-based frameworks offer for thinking about Palestine and Israel, both scholarly and publicly.

Melissa Melpignano is a dance scholar and practitioner, working as Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Texas at El Paso. She received her PhD in Culture and Performance from UCLA. Her research at large investigates how dance and choreography contribute to theorizations of conflict and settler colonialism in contested and militarized regions (such as Palestine-Israel and the Mexico-U.S. border) and in public discourses (particularly around healthcare access and water distribution). Her current book project, Unsettling Choreographies: Dancing Livability in Palestine-Israel, examines choreographic practices that, since the 2014 war on Gaza, denormalize and invalidate settler-colonial ideas and mechanisms, thereby generating new trajectories and models of livability. Her article “A Necropower Carnival: Israeli Soldiers Dancing in the Palestinian Occupied Territories” (TDR: The Drama Review, 67, 1, 2023), received the 2024 Selma Jeanne Cohen Prize in Dance Aesthetics from the American Society for Aesthetics. Her scholarship also appears in Dance Research Journal, Journal of Dance Education, The Oxford Handbook of Jewishness and Dance, 50 Contemporary Choreographers (3rd edition), Contemporary Choreography (3rd edition), among others.

Kristofferson San Pablo describes ghosts as the people, images, and places that linger in memory. They include family and friends, the landscape of Southern California, and the passing images and stories that crowd our screens.

The boundary between online and offscreen life has all but vanished. Our content feeds, shaped by algorithms, bring us moments of humor, joy, grief, and violence in the same breath. These are at once personal and shared, local and global. Working across painting, drawing, installation, and sculpture, San Pablo explores the intersections between our shared culture and personal experience to explore the absurdities, contradictions, and histories hidden within.

For All the Ghosts is Kristofferson San Pablo’s first solo exhibition in the Inland Empire, the region where the artist grew up. For All the Ghosts is a homecoming, and home is never without its ghosts.

Bios

Kristofferson San Pablo is a Filipino artist based in Los Angeles. San Pablo’s work moves between the autobiographical (portraits of the people and places around him) and observations of the world through his lens as an observer/participant in pop culture. In his work, scenes of everyday life evoke ideas about identity, beauty and humor but are met with ideas about authority, classism and piracy. To San Pablo, those oppositions serve as a way to create a type of light-hearted but also critical narrative that illustrates his experience growing up in California.

Jennifer Frias is visual arts curator and educator whose multidisciplinary experience spans curatorial practice, museum education, community engagement, and collections management. She currently serves as Director/Curator of the College of the Arts Galleries at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF). Prior to her role at CSUF, Frias was Director of Education and Academic Programs at UCR ARTS / California Museum of Photography, where she co-founded OFF THE BLOCK, an award-winning summer intensive for high school filmmakers. Films from the program have been recognized by PBS SoCal, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and Sundance. She previously held curatorial positions at UCR’s Sweeney Art Gallery and Culver Center of the Arts, and worked in the art collections at The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. Her curatorial projects focus on artists practices and processes, marginalized narratives, and the intersections of art and technology, often bridging contemporary visual culture with classroom curriculum and broader community engagement.

Kuang P'ing - Guang Ping Mirror Form (1/25)
This Older Traditional Style of t’ai chi ch’uan was taught to Harvey Kurland by Kuo Lien Ying who brought this style to America. Kurland is one of the few remaining first generation students of Kuo. This form is said to be originally taught by Yang Ban-hou, son of the founder of Yang style, Yang Lu-chan, both being martial art instructors for the Imperial Guards. We will work on the original version taught by Kuo. If time allows we will also work on the Mirror version.

This prestigious event showcases outstanding research from students representing 58 community colleges across California. The HTCC annual conference provides community college honors students with the opportunity to present their academic work in a professional setting.

We welcome research-based presentations, posters, and creative performances spanning the humanities, sciences, arts, social sciences, and pre-professional programs, as well as research exploring the honors experience.

It will be followed by a presentation from PSModCom education committee’s Greg Braun that will give us a richer understanding of Neutra’s Masterpiece, and the greater significance of the loss when it was demolished.

Scott Goldstein and Dave Yakir are brothers-in-law and co-director/ producers working in Chicago and the greater Palm Springs area. Together they have created several award winning shorts as well as commercial and social media work. Both have accomplished solo careers but they came together to form Streeterville Productions to pursue passion projects, promote friends and paint outside the lines of their everyday work. They are very proud to present their first documentary, Richard Neutra’s Maslon House. Scott is vice-president of the board of Preservation Mirage.

Greg Braun is a long-time member of PS Modcom’s Education Committee, donating his time teaching architectural model building and perspective drawing to public and private school students in the Coachella Valley school system. Greg has been in the computer aided design/build industry for 37 years, with projects including world-class art museums, science centers, and international corporate headquarters. He currently teaches custom CAD software to US Postal Service industrial engineers for designing and documenting large industrial processing plant projects.

With an unprecedented archive of photographs featuring more than 100 artists, the book traces disco’s rise from intimate New York dance floors to legendary clubs around the world—showcasing the sound, style, and spirit that reshaped how the world listened, danced, and connected.

Our featured speaker, Christian John Wikane, is a NYC-based music journalist and essayist who has interviewed more than 600 recording artists, songwriters, and producers. He is also the producer of the video interview series Unscripted: Conversations with Christian John Wikane, and has served as a consultant on major documentary projects exploring music legends and cultural history.

SOMETIMES THE RAIN, SOMETIMES THE SEA

This playful and quirky adaptation of The Little Mermaid follows a Little Rain Cloud who falls in love with a human while also unpacking Hans Christian Andersen’s personal history - though, as our narrator insists, it’s not The Little Mermaid at all.

“Sometimes the Rain, Sometimes the Sea” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.

Currently enrolled UCR Students can reserve one complimentary ticket online when tickets go on sale.
