From Here to the Horizon: Photographs in Honor of Barry Lopez explores our connection to the land through photography. From badlands and sandhills to old-growth forests and slot canyons, from the New England coast to the Great Lakes, the photographs evoke the distinctive character of American topography—at once quotidian and mythic, welcoming and forbidding. Collectively, the exhibition explores the power of place and the ways photographs help us see, understand, and re-connect with the land.

From Here to the Horizon was inspired by the work of American author Barry Lopez (1945–2020), best known for Arctic Dreams: Imagination and Desire in a Northern Landscape (1986), for which he won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. Lopez spent more than fifty years traveling the world and writing about the deep ties between people and nature.

UCR Provost Elizabeth Watkins and SPP Dean Mark Long will deliver opening remarks. The lecture is open to faculty, staff, students, and the wider community.

About the Event: Drawing on decades of research and immersive fieldwork in Chicago, University of Chicago behavioral economist Jens Ludwig shows that most gun violence in America is not what we have long thought—and that the solutions can be simple, sidestepping the political debates that have hampered progress on one of the United States’ most intractable problems. The talk is based on Ludwig’s new book “Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence,” named one of the New Yorker’s Best Books of 2025.

About the Speaker: Jens Ludwig is the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, Pritzker Director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, co-director of the National Bureau of Economic Research’s working group on the economics of crime, and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. He started the Crime Lab 18 years ago to serve as an R&D partner to the public sector to help solve some of society’s most difficult policy challenges. The Crime Lab’s work has changed public policy at scale in Chicago, New York and other cities around the country, with results published in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals across multiple disciplines and featured in national news outlets like the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, NPR and PBS News Hour.

This playful and quirky adaptation of The Little Mermaid follows a Little Rain Cloud who falls in love with a human while also unpacking Hans Christian Andersen’s personal history - though, as our narrator insists, it’s not The Little Mermaid at all.

Generations of artists call Robert A. Nakamura “The Godfather of Asian American film,” but his son, Tad, calls him Dad. As the filmmaking son of a filmmaking legend, Tad uses the lessons his dad taught him to decipher the legacy of an aging man who was a child survivor of the WWII incarceration of Japanese Americans, a successful photographer who gave it up to tell his own story, an activist at the dawn of a social movement—and a father whose struggles have won his son freedoms that eluded Japanese Americans of his generation. As Parkinson's Disease clouds his memory, Tad sets out to retrieve his story—and in the process discovers his own. The two have made films together, with Robert always by Tad’s side. THIRD ACT is most likely the last.
