            &lt;p&gt;Two new algorithms could help earthquake early warning systems buy you a few extra seconds to drop, cover, and hold on before the ground &lt;pwa class="pwa-mark pwa-mark-done" data-pwa-category="style" data-pwa-dictionary-word="begins to shake" data-pwa-heavy="false" data-pwa-hint="Readability may be enhanced by using: shakes" data-pwa-id="pwa-8BA7D44A19F72DC1869AD7AD8D134DA1" data-pwa-rule-id="READABILITY_931" data-pwa-suggestions="shakes"&gt;begins to shake&lt;/pwa&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Computer scientists at the University of California, Riverside have developed two algorithms that will improve earthquake monitoring and help farmers protect their crops from dangerous insects, or monitor the health of chickens and other animals. The algorithms spot patterns in enormous datasets quickly, with less computing power and lower cost, than other methods and have been used to improve earthquake detection, monitor the insect vector Asian citrus psyllid, and &lt;pwa class="pwa-mark pwa-mark-done" data-pwa-category="style" data-pwa-dictionary-word="evaluate" data-pwa-heavy="false" data-pwa-hint="Readability may be enhanced by using: test" data-pwa-id="pwa-5E18124B48423982DC78CDCACFD8F7A0" data-pwa-rule-id="READABILITY_2041" data-pwa-suggestions="test"&gt;evaluate&lt;/pwa&gt; the feeding behavior of chickens.&lt;/p&gt;

            &lt;p&gt;"Preparation and good timing enabled Gareth Funning and a team of researchers to collect a unique data set following the 2014 South Napa earthquake that showed different parts of the fault, sometimes only a few kilometers apart, moved at different speeds and at different times.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Aided by GPS measurements made just weeks before the earthquake and data from a new radar satellite, the team found post-earthquake fault movement, known as afterslip, was concentrated in areas of loosely packed sediment.             &lt;p&gt;"A team of researchers, including one from the University of California, Riverside, has discovered that earthquake ruptures can jump much further than previously thought, a finding that could have severe implications on the Los Angeles area and other regions in the world.&lt;/p&gt;
