The Dance GSA is an association of MFA students in Experimental Choreography and PhD students in Critical Dance Studies at University of California, Riverside. The Dance GSA exists as a social, research, and professional community forum that promotes creative collaboration at the graduate level. Our mission is to foster community within the Department of Dance, and to support and advocate for dance graduate students.<\/p>\r\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”]

<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”80px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”3\/5″][vc_column_text]Critical Dance Experiments – March 5 & 6, 2026<\/strong>\r\nUCR Arts Building, Arts 166 \/ Performance Lab<\/strong>\r\n\r\nCritical Dance Experiments is a conference organized by MFA and PhD students in UC Riverside\u2019s Department of Dance \u2013 it aims to rethink dance scholarship in its multiple forms, at the nexus of theory and praxis, and in response to the urgencies of our shared times and places. We consider flesh in its potential to interrupt, intervene, and\/or reimagine an existence otherwise, seeking to address how our embodied practices, choices, and pedagogies as artists, educators and scholars transit between multiple conceptions of what the body is and what dance and performance do, and understanding the need to build coalition not against but through difference.<\/span>\r\n\r\nBy calling in Hortense Spillers\u2019 theory of flesh, we name the labor of Black women\/femme scholars and artists who have contributed to shaping Dance Studies.\u00a0 We continue to interrogate racialized and gendered assumptions of personhood that underlie foundational terms and keywords in dance and performance, such as choreography, technique, performativity, and\u00a0 \u201cthe body.\u201d\u00a0 We are interested in how academic research, aesthetic practices and teaching methodologies may contribute to disrupting or upholding hegemonic structures that condition our ways of being and perceiving the world.<\/span>\r\n\r\nOrganizing Committee<\/strong>\r\n<\/b>dan del\u00ea, Chair\r\n<\/span>Michelle Cole, Co-Chair\r\n<\/span>SUR Sanford\r\n<\/span>Sam Briseno Jimenez<\/span>\r\n\r\nNO FEES FOR CONFERENCE. Dance Graduate Student Association FAQ<\/span><\/h3>[vc_tta_accordion active_section=”1″ collapsible_all=”true”][vc_tta_section title=”What is DaGSA?” tab_id=”1657560960212-0cc0b37c-9e87″][vc_column_text]The Dance Graduate Student Association is a dance graduate student-led organization that advocates for and works to help fellow students with their needs\/support throughout the graduate school experience. Graduate school is a challenging place and we advocate for students and their well-being. This organization hosts events throughout the year including holding professionalization workshops and talks, hosting regular writing groups, assisting with Teaching Assistant issues and best practices, meeting with faculty and communicating departmental concerns from students to faculty and vice-versa. We also host a few series of panel discussions, which include topics relevant to MFA and PhD students. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”How do I get involved with DaGSA?” tab_id=”1657560960226-c332298e-deb0″][vc_column_text]You can both nominate yourself or get nominated for a position on the DaGSA board.\u00a0 Sometimes, outgoing members might ask you to consider running!\u00a0 The board consists of dance grad student elected positions. Elections usually happen in the Spring quarter.<\/span>\r\n\r\n-President:\u00a0 organizes and hosts events catering to needs of the graduate students in the department<\/span>\r\n\r\n-Labor representative:\u00a0 reports to students about issues concerning the labor union and their rights as teacher\u2019s assistants and graduate students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n-GSA rep:\u00a0 attends regular meetings concerning the support which graduate student organizations receive from UCR.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Who funds and aids DaGSA?” tab_id=”1657561198210-b2d3b340-9674″][vc_column_text]Funding for DaGSA is through the dance department and CHASS services.\u00a0 For additional resources, the department chair and graduate advisor meet with the presidents to aid us in securing funds for conferences and other events.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe are also grateful for the help of Lily Szeto for event organization and updating our website.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What kinds of events are organized by DaGSA?” tab_id=”1657561235338-d9606f63-d1b4″][vc_column_text]The kinds of events that DaGSA hosts vary depending on the requests and needs of graduate students. We currently host three regular series of events in addition to aiding the organization of Dance Under Construction (see below):\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n-Ask Us Anything- This series uses each individual session to focus on one part of the dance graduate student process in creating your dissertation or thesis. These include: all things related to forming your committee, how to make your reading lists, how to navigate each step of the dissertation and MFA final project\u00a0 process, as well as careers after graduate school.<\/span>\r\n\r\n-Faculty Hot Seat- This wildly popular series focuses on our brilliant faculty. This started as a way for grads to get to know the faculty and to ask them a little more about who they are and how they got where they are. The session is usually run by a graduate student interviewer with prepared questions.\u00a0 Towards the end, the attendees are always given time to ask any questions they have as well.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n-Writing and Accountability Group- This is a weekly writing and accountability meeting hosted by a graduate student. This is usually run in two hour increments and chosen at a time that is optimal for the most grads. Hosted via Zoom, this space provides two hours of focused work time for attendees to work on whatever they see fit for their schedule.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is Dance Under Construction?” tab_id=”1657561281437-7fa45fd0-ca65″][vc_column_text]Dance Under Construction or DUC is a dance grad student led, organized and executed conference that focuses on the current and unfurling work of not only UCR dance department graduate students but also scholars across the country.
