She came to UCR from the Ohio State\u00a0University-Columbus, Ohio. In Summer 2014, she served as a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow at\u00a0the University of Ilorin-Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria on capacity building, research development and\u00a0mentoring for faculty and graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>She has served as president of the Women\u2019s Caucus of the African Literature Association\u00a0(WOCALA), and on the Steering Committee of the Women\u2019s Caucus of the African Studies\u00a0Association. She is a Past President (2013-2014) of the African Literature Association (ALA), and\u00a0has served as a Board Member for the African Studies Association (USA).<\/p>\n<p>Kalu\u2019s scholarship and teaching interests include African literatures, African American literature,\u00a0African gender studies, Women in Development, and Women and war. Her research interests\u00a0include African and African American literatures and literary theory construction, Women in the\u00a0African Diaspora, African development issues and globalization. She is currently completing work\u00a0on an anthology titled <em>Women in Contemporary African Literature<\/em>. She is also continuing work on\u00a0a second book length project titled\u00a0<em>Language, Woman and Story: African Literature and Social\u00a0<\/em><em>Transformation<\/em>. Kalu has also published fictional works.<\/p>\n<p>Her awards include a Ford Foundation postdoctoral fellowship, a Rockefeller Writer-in-Residence\u00a0Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Fellowship for teachers. Her\u00a0published works include articles in journals like <em>Africa Today<\/em>, <em>Research in African Literatures<\/em>,\u00a0<em>African Studies Review<\/em>, <em>the Atlantic Literary Review<\/em>, <em>Seminar and the Literary Griot<\/em>. Other\u00a0publications include\u00a0<em>Women, Literature and Development in Africa<\/em> (Africa World Press, 2001);\u00a0<em>Broken Lives and Other Stories<\/em>(Fiction) (Ohio University Press, 2003), and <em>the\u00a0Rienner Anthology of\u00a0<\/em><em>African Literature<\/em> (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2007). The Anthology, the first work of its kind in\u00a0African literature, received ForeWord Magazine\u2019s Book of the Year Award (2007) in the reference\u00a0category.
