Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The holidays are always a special time for me, a time to relax, recharge, rejuvenate, and spend time with family, friends, and loved ones. It’s also a time to reflect on the past year and an opportunity to look forward to what 2023 will bring.

There are many areas across CNAS of which I am extremely proud. From our faculty’s cutting-edge research, to student achievements both in and outside of the classroom, to our staff, who keep the college moving forward, and our alumni, parents, and community members who offer their support in countless ways. But what truly stands out is our collective effort to support our students.

With your generosity, nearly $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded to CNAS undergraduate and graduate students this year! A few highlights of the CNAS Scholarship awards include:

$225,000 for students receiving the CNAS Science of Sustainability Fellowship, which provides support for environmental and sustainability research
Nearly $40,000 will be awarded to graduate students receiving the Dexiang Dong and Yiyun Cao Graduate Fellowship in Human Virology, and the Leonard Family Foundation Graduate Student Fellowship
$24,000 for CNAS Dean’s Scholarship and Fellowship recipients

Many of the scholarships also play a critical role guiding the college in creating a community where research, teaching, and public service will thrive, including:

Excellence in Inclusivity: Enhancing our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in CNAS and across campus
Graduate Programs: Strengthening support and resources for students in our graduate programs
The Science of Sustainability: Sharing, educating, and informing our local, regional, and global communities of our research to improve the world we live in

As a college, we strive to continually make meaningful progress in these areas, but we need your help. As 2022 comes to a close, please consider making a tax-deductible gift, of any amount, to support the success of our students in the following ways:

The CNAS Dean’s Graduate Student Support Fund provides our graduate students with funding to put towards their educational needs and research.
The CNAS Dean’s Scholarship and Fellowship Fund provides resources for our exceptional undergraduate and graduate students.
The CNAS Dean’s Excellence Fund supports the dean’s priorities for student success in the areas of research, academic inquiry, and more.

Dear CNAS Colleagues,

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, many of us reflected on this year and all we are thankful for. I would like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you. Every member of the CNAS community has been instrumental in helping our students, the college, the university, and each other navigate through these extraordinary times. You continue to exhibit great resilience, courage, and empathy as we work to provide students with an accessible world-class education during unprecedented circumstances. I am incredibly thankful for your individual and collective efforts.

Nonprofit organizations across the globe are preparing for #GivingTuesday on December 1 and UC Riverside’s colleges and schools will be participating as well. CNAS’ featured funds focus on the importance of supporting our students and campus community and I invite you to learn more and support the college’s #GivingTuesday efforts by clicking on the links below.

CNAS Student Scholarships and Fellowships Fund allows supporters to make a direct impact on the lives of CNAS graduate and undergraduate students who will become the next generation of scientists. These funds play a critical role in helping students who demonstrate financial need during this time.

Advancing Inclusivity in Entomology Endowed Scholarship will support entomology undergraduate students who experience social, cultural, and financial barriers and allow them to participate and excel in entomology research at UCR without worrying about financial commitments.

Donations made to the UCR Botanic Gardens Conservatory will be used for a new interactive exhibit space designed to engage and educate visitors about the diversity of the plant kingdom while allowing them to enjoy nature safely.

Helping UC Riverside students affected by the coronavirus will be the focus of a special Giving Tuesday campaignon May 5.

Normally held on the first Tuesday after Black Friday as an international annual day of giving, the global nonprofit behind the campaign organized the upcoming fundraiser as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

At UCR, a crowdfunding campaign to support the health and well-being of students called Highlanders Helping Highlanders was launched March 16. It’s raised more than $30,000 from 165 donors to date.

“Our priority and our goal is to help graduate and undergraduate UCR students navigate through this uncertain time, and provide the necessary resources they need to continue to succeed,” said Crystal Sankey, UCR’s director of annual giving.

Donors can choose from a dozen funds aiding students in a variety of ways, helping with needs such as housing, health care, nutrition, access to technology, transportation, counseling, and mental health services. Learn more about the funds.

Due to the campus closure, Annual Giving will focus its efforts leading up to May 5 on digital marketing, promoting the campaign through campus newsletters, emails, and phone calls.

Dear CNAS Faculty and Staff,

Over the weekend, I had a chance to reflect on how grateful I am to be surrounded by colleagues who are so dedicated in supporting the academic success of our students and the innovative research led by our faculty. There is so much to be thankful for:

UC Riverside was ranked No. 1 in social mobility by U.S. News & World Report
CNAS Faculty were ranked among the world’s most influential scholars

But there is still much more to accomplish at CNAS. In the spirit of tomorrow’s national day of giving, Giving Tuesday, I ask that you consider donating to the Science Ambassadors Outreach Program or the Geodesic Dome at the Botanic Gardens.

The CNAS Science Ambassadors perform outreach to local K-12 students to promote science and higher education. Your gift will help support Science Ambassador Outreach Programs like the SISTERS Program, Delta SIFY, SMASH, and the Little EINSTENs. For more information about these programs, or to make a gift, please visit the CNAS Giving webpage.

Donations to the Geodesic Dome in the Botanic Gardens will help raise funds to reopen the Geodesic Dome. The beloved dome, which was built in 1984, is currently closed and needs structural repairs. Support the dome by making a donation today.
