June 17, 2025

CNAS Dean Peter Atkinson had some special wisdom he wanted to impart to students making up the college’s 71st graduating class during commencement ceremonies held on June 16 at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA. “Science matters,” he said, “and science is never finished. Every answer leads to a new question. Every theory invites deeper exploration. Your journey doesn't end here—it evolves from here. Today, we celebrate that evolution.”

And so, for more than 1,300 undergraduate students receiving their Bachelor’s degrees and over 60 graduate students accepting their Master’s degrees, the journey of discovery that began at CNAS continues into the future, always evolving toward new horizons.

CNAS Dean Peter Atkinson

Dean Atkinson remarked with pride that, in just the past year, CNAS faculty, staff, and students have made discoveries of national and international impact across multiple scientific disciplines, including uncovering chemicals produced by plants that enable healthier crops, developing new technology to better detect the gravitational waves predicted by Einstein, and bringing to light fresh insights on a biochemical pathway that may provide treatments for epilepsy and autism.

“There are numerous other examples, several in any given week throughout any given year,” Dean Atkinson said. “Today, you join the thousands of Highlanders who have gone on to shape industries, influence science, educate future generations, and transform lives. You’ve become a community of scholars who adapted, created, and persevered.

“And you did it at a university that reflects the future of higher education in our country,” he added. “UCR is consistently ranked No. 1 in the nation for social mobility; it’s a testament to how many of you are the first in your families to walk across this stage. We are proud to be among the leading research institutions in the country with a student body that reflects the richness of California and the energy of the Inland Empire.”

The academic procession at commencement was led by the UCR Pipe Band dressed in tartans. Presiding over the session were Grand Marshal Kenneth Barish, Chair of the UCR Academic Senate and Professor of Physics; Commencement Marshal Saba Najafi (Biology) walking with the College Banner; Graduate Student Marshal Melia Mariano (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Master’s degree) walking with the Master’s of Science Banner; and Undergraduate Student Marshal Lily Doan Vo (Neuroscience) walking with the Bachelor’s of Science Banner. The National Anthem was sung by Alyssa Marie Brand (Neuroscience).

Although the day belonged to all the graduates, it was also a momentous occasion for UCR’s ninth Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox who for more than a decade has championed student success at the college. The CNAS commencement on June 16 marked Chancellor Wilcox’s final ceremony as UCR’s leader which, under his tenure, has grown in size, reputation, and impact. In his remarks, Chancellor Wilcox, spoke about the connection that alums forever share with UCR and the responsibility that stems from that relationship. “Now we have a responsibility to each other,” he said. “We have a responsibility to make sure your university gets better every day, because, as it does, your degree becomes more valuable every day. And, in turn, you have a responsibility to make us proud -- to do the things that reflect well on UCR and raise our collective esteem and visibility.”

UCR Chancellor Kim Wilcox

Chancellor Wilcox cautioned that he felt this year was different from years past; that for the first time in his life the creation of knowledge at universities across the country is at risk of being dismantled. He said that it was late in World War II when a group of leaders in government recognized the U.S. was victorious in part due to our accrued knowledge in science and technology.

“They set about to create a system in America like no other in the world where universities and the government worked together to create the knowledge that makes America great,” Chancellor Wilcox said. “That relationship has lasted 80 years. And it’s not just science and technology; it’s the whole notion that we as universities have a responsibility to help you become independent thinkers and judges of society. And that’s at risk.

“So I stand here today extremely proud of what you’ve accomplished and excited about your future,” he continued. “And I hope that your abilities, your wisdom and what you’ve learned at UCR will help you make sure our world stay as it has for the last 80 years, a place where wisdom, knowledge, independent thought continues to be valued.”

Standouts

During commencement ceremonies several students were cited for outstanding achievements. Hannah Jeanette Moore was recognized with CNAS’ Outstanding Achievement Award. She was selected by the CNAS Divisional Deans from among the Academic Excellence Award winners for exemplary performance in one or more of the following areas: academics and research, creative activity, service to the college, and demonstrated leadership.

Arnav Kacker (Biology) and Theodore Adams (Entomology) were honored with the Rosemary S.J. Schraer Award which recognizes two graduating seniors for academic excellence. The award was named after Ms. Schraer who served as UCR Chancellor from 1987-1992.

CNAS graduates were also recognized with the college Academic Excellence Awards which are bestowed for achievement in academics and research or creative activity. The award winners are: Hannah Jeanette Moore (Biochemistry), Theodore Adams (Entomology), Naran Luvsanravdan (Biology), Lina Mai (Chemistry), Eve Fraczkiewicz (Data Science), Liem Nguyen (Environmental Sciences), Jason Patrick Palos (Mathematics), Michelle Thanh Pham (Mathematics for Teachers of Secondary School), Anastasia Ghilenschi Colton (Microbiology), Tara Duo Gao (Neuroscience), Shane Levin (Physics), Abigail Noguera (Plant Biology), Srisai Saavarni Chilukuri (Statistics), and Samiha Alan (Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology).

Alyssa Marie Brand (Neuroscience) showcased the exceptional talent of CNAS students by delivering the only live performance of the National Anthem across all six UCR commencement ceremonies, bringing a uniquely personal and powerful touch to the celebration.

CNAS Student Commencement Speaker, Dina Mirmotalebisohi

In her student speaker commencement address, Dina Mirmotalebisohi (Biology) touched on the change that all students experience during their college careers. “I have heard my friends say they would barely recognize the person they were four years ago,” she said. “However, there is a part of me that strongly recognizes her, the girl who struggled to find the feeling of belonging until she came to UCR. Among being one of the most diverse campuses in the nation, I truly believe the level of inclusivity we host here is unmatched. I do belong. We all belong.”

After conferring the degrees, it was time for Ria Nair (Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology) to lead the graduates in singing UCR’s Alma Mater, “Hail Fair UCR” followed by the traditional Baccalaureate Tassel-Turning (always right to left) headed by Abby Choy (Biology).

As the recessional wended its way to the exit doors of the cavernous Toyota Arena, there was much to process for students and their families about the communal experience that is at the heart of UCR. But as graduates of the CNAS Class of ’25 prepare themselves for their own singular journeys in the months and years that lay ahead, Ms. Mirmotalebisohi encouraged her fellow Highlanders to take time to revel in the present moment they’ve worked so hard to achieve. “We count the days so often, we forget to count the seconds,” she said. Quoting the 12th century Persian poet and polymath, Omar Khayyam, she added: “Let us not grieve for what may come tomorrow; instead, let us treasure this fleeting breath we borrow.”

  </picture>

            June 18, 2024

Every graduating class from UC Riverside is special, but many of the students comprising the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences’ 70th Commencement ceremony hold a select status that they share with few others. Academically, they came of age during a worldwide pandemic and all the challenges that stemmed from it.

The Class of 2024 that filed into the Toyota Arena in Ontario, CA on June 17th for the conferring of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees make up perhaps the last large group of students that were forced to put in the extra effort necessary to navigate the COVID pandemic. “For many of our graduates, the traditional rites of a high school graduation were not part of your experience,” said Peter Atkinson, CNAS Interim Dean, addressing the class. “Your initial years at UCR were characterized by remote learning, amidst one of the most trying periods of our history. To our transfer students and master’s students, you became part of the CNAS community as we were rediscovering life back on campus.”

Dean Atkinson added that over the past few years, the Class of 2024 has navigated through difficult times with remarkable perseverance and commitment. “That is your legacy,” he said. “When history unfolds, future generations will look to you as beacons of resilience, a collective of young individuals who persevered and remained steadfast in their commitment to shaping their own future and the futures of those around them. You make us all proud.”

The academic procession was led by the UCR Pipe Band dressed in tartans. Presiding over the session were Grand Marshal Sang-Hee Lee (Academic Senate Chair); Undergraduate Student Marshal Ledia Amgad Nasr (Biochemistry degree candidate); Graduate Student Marshal Mahziar Khazaali (Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology master‘s degree candidate), and Faculty Marshal Andrew B. Gray (Associate Professor of Watershed Hydrology, Environmental Sciences Department). The Flag Bearer was Linlin Liu (Statistics degree candidate).

In his remarks, the ninth Chancellor of UCR, Kim A. Wilcox, spoke about university life as being not about place but about the people that populate it – from faculty and staff to fellow students in the residence halls and in the classroom. “All of those people are what made a difference and help make you who and what you are today,” he said.

Chancellor Wilcox said that four years ago, the college couldn’t schedule convocation on campus to welcome new students. “If we had, I would have said to you: ‘You’re not coming to UCR, you are to become a part of UCR.’ Again, it’s the people who make our university all that it is.

“So today, you are a successful and inspiring part of UCR and you’re going to go from this place to all kinds of other places – other places geographically and figuratively in your lives and careers,” he added. “And you’re going to be a UCR grad carrying your experiences and all those interactions with all those other people to the rest of the world. We’re excited about you being our ambassadors. We know that you’ll do well and we look forward to having you come back many times to reacquaint and reconfirm your commitments to your university – back to this place.

During the Commencement ceremony, several students were cited for outstanding achievements. Peter Carney (Physics degree candidate) won the Outstanding Achievement Award which recognizes one CNAS student for their exemplary achievement in academics and research, their involvement in the college, and for their commitment to service and citizenship. Carney also shared honors with Alyssa Ashley Menor Fundal (Environmental Sciences and Psychology degree candidate) with the Rosemary S. J. Scharer Award which recognizes the academic excellence of two CNAS graduating seniors.

CNAS students, selected by faculty, were honored with Academic Excellence Awards which are bestowed for achieving excellence in academics and research or creative activity. The award winners are: Andrea Barajas (Environmental Sciences), Emilia Lynn Marie Burnham (Entomology), Justin James Diab (Biology), Riley Hunke (Mathematics for Secondary School Teachers), Mitchell Howard Larsen (Plant Biology), Linlin Liu (Statistics), Ray Lopez-Amaya (Biology), Adelric Low (Data Science), Ibrahim Bassem Maaz (Biochemistry), Sudhir Gajanan Murthy (Mathematics), Kelli Nguyen (Cell, Molecular & Developmental Biology), Joshua Roth (Physics and Astronomy), Maricela Toops (Microbiology), Lena Williams (Chemistry), and Patrick James Williamson (Neuroscience).

Jennalyn Resendez (Cell, Molecular, Developmental Biology degree candidate) gave the student commencement address. She exhorted her fellow graduates to take away more than just the hard skills that look impressive on a resume, but to also consciously recognize the deeper things that their shared college experience has taught them and then build upon that knowledge. “You can do it by prioritizing your own personal growth and success,” she said, “by finding ways to continuously learn; challenging yourself to be better. Do the things that might scare you or the things that are out of your comfort zone because you never know, you might surprise yourself in the end.”

After conferring the degrees and the singing UCR’s Alma Mater, “Hail Fair UCR” performed by Nicolas Sanchez (Biochemistry degree candidate), Sara Doering (Environmental Science degree candidate) led the traditional Baccalaureate Tassel-Turning (always right to left).

Before the graduates filed out of the Toyota Arena to begin the next exciting phase of their lives, Dean Atkinson reminded them that the Class of 2024 is distinct, stamped in a way that very few classes have ever been. “Your attitude has been forged through these times,” he said. “As you seize your future, always remember: there's no goal beyond your reach, no obstacle you cannot overcome, and nothing that can impede your journey to success.”

More about the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences

Tags

  </picture>

            June 23, 2023

If the College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences (CNAS) could have offered up two graduates more representative of the deep excellence of the Class of 2023, they’d have been hard-pressed to find individuals more exemplary than Leonardo Lloyd Padilla and Anviksha Srivastava, who addressed their peers as student commencement speakers in the morning and afternoon sessions at UCR’s 69th commencement ceremony.

Both graduates exemplify what Anviksha termed in her afternoon address as honoring the “Tartan soul” of integrity, accountability, excellence and respect.

“We will never procrastinate. We will always keep learning,” she said.

Both Anviksha and Leonardo plan on continuing to serve their communities by becoming doctors. “This commencement serves not only to recognize our undergraduate years, but propels us into the next chapter of our lives,” Leonardo said.

The valedictorian of the 2023 University Honors Graduating Class, Leonardo is earning a Bachelor's of Science in Biology with a Minor in History. While maintaining a consistent presence on the Chancellor's Honor List, he held a work-study position on campus at Information Technology Solutions for three years.

Outside of class, Leonardo volunteered as an EMT in the Riverside community, and after returning from what he described as “a life-changing summer” studying biomedicine in Scandinavia, Leonardo served as an ambassador for the Study Abroad Office, helping other UCR students pursue their dreams abroad. He also volunteered as an ambassador for University Honors while completing his Capstone project, conducting research on the role of TMEM132 proteins. In recognition of his leadership and volunteer efforts, he received the Highlander Impact Award. He plans on becoming a trauma surgeon, and will spend his gap year before medical school working full-time as an EMT in Los Angeles.

Anviksha majored in Biochemistry with a medical emphasis, and plans on becoming a physician. During her time at UCR, Anviksha was a peer academic leader, the Shadow MD club president, and a Brain Exercise Initiative volunteer. Her time out of class was spent studying or reading a good book.

Speaking for the Class of 2023, Leonardo said every graduating student should feel proud.

“As a class, we didn’t just make it through college, we excelled past boundaries in research, internships, and community service-based clubs,” he said. “Many of us flew higher than we ever could have imagined, spending semesters abroad, reinforcing our UC experience with an international perspective. Discord study chats and regularly attending office hours meant that we put in the extra effort to invest in ourselves and our relationships with others. Every day was a challenge, but we didn’t just succeed, we surpassed.”
Anviksha said that for her, it feels like she came to campus just yesterday for orientation.

“I hope when you look back to these four years, you remember the fun times. I know I will,” she said. “I’m going to miss the community we’ve built here, from waiting in line early for those prized hoodies at ASPB events to comforting each other after a difficult exam with the reminder that ‘This class is curved.’”

Both speakers felt they would be remiss is they didn’t credit their families for their academic success. Anviksha cited her parents, family friends and the UCR faculty for inspiring her to work hard and “dream big.”

“As first first-generation graduates, many of us will soon walk off this stage as the first members of our families to have a degree from a four-year university,” Leonardo said. “From the borders our ancestors crossed, the rivers they forded and the mountains they scaled, our graduation today does not represent our journeys alone. For every all-nighter we pulled during finals week, there was a parent working a night shift. For every rainy day, a phone call with a friend, and for every time we doubted ourselves, there was a mentor to help us find the path. Through every step of our journey, our supporters have been there, inspiring humility in success and perseverance in defeat. We as graduates will never be able to adequately express our gratitude.”

Anviksha said that despite the excitement and nervousness leavened perhaps by a tinge of sadness, that her compatriots are full of ideas and plans for the next phase in their lives.

“I’m all for making plans,” she said, echoing John Lennon’s caution of life happening when you’re busy making other plans. “But making schedules have taught me two things. The first is that life can change any plan at any time. So, make plans, but learn how to roll with the plot twists. Be kind to yourself because things always happen for a reason. And the second is to appreciate the importance of right now.”

In closing, Leonardo remarked that perhaps Eleanor Roosevelt said it best when she opined that the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

So, he said, exhorting the Class of ’23, “Keep on dreaming!”

In her remarks, Kathryn Uhrich, Dean, College of Natural & Agricultural Sciences and Professor of Chemistry, asked for a show of hands of students graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology. “If you look around,” she said, “we should have about 735 students raising their hands.” She added that another 74 students were graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology. “As a collective group, consider the impact that the entire CNAS class of 2023 will have” Dean Uhrich said. “Between both CNAS commencement ceremonies, that’s more than 1,600 graduating students!”

The academic procession in both ceremonies was led by the UCR Pipe Band dressed in tartans. Presiding over the morning session were Academic Senate Chair Sang-Hee Lee, who served as Grand Marshal, Undergraduate Student Marshal and Biology degree candidate Somtochukwu Adaobi Uzoka, and Faculty Marshal Connie Nugent, Divisional Dean of Student Academic Affairs. ,

The afternoon session was presided over again by Grand Marshal Sang-Hee Lee; Graduate Student Marshal and Statistics degree candidate Christian Daniel Duenas, Undergraduate Student Marshal and Biochemistry degree candidate William Satoh Troxel, and Faculty Marshal Stephanie Dingwall, Professor of Teaching, Biochemistry.

Singing the National Anthem in the morning was Chermaine Tac-Al Amaya, a Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology degree candidate. The anthem was sung by Tammy Le Van, a Neuroscience degree candidate, in the afternoon.

Dean Uhrich reminded graduates and their families of the original caretakers of the land, water and air that makes up UCR – the indigenous peoples, Cahuilla, Tongva, Luiseño, and Serrano – and of all their ancestors and descendants, past, present, and future. “Today the UCR campus is home to many Indigenous peoples from all over the world, including UCR faculty, students, and staff, and we are grateful to have the opportunity to live and work on these homelands,” she said.

In his remarks, the ninth Chancellor of UCR, Kim A. Wilcox, expounded on what Abraham Lincoln once referred to as “the mystic chords of memory” and how they are the ties that bind generations of CNAS graduates together. He told the students of a recent reunion of the Pioneer Class of UCR that dates back to 1954, and said that many in that class remembered putting wooden planks on the ground to keep their feet out of the mud after a rain as they trekked to class.

“Every class contributes to our university,” Chancellor Wilcox said. “But some classes are special. That first class was special. But so too is this class – a class that endured the greatest pandemic in the world, had to think about classes and then think about going home and about coming back safely. All the uncertainties that happened during your college career make you special because of the resilience you’ve shown to get here today.”

According to Dean Uhrich, CNAS has been driven by excellence in inclusivity, strengthening the support and resources for students in Master’s and Doctoral programs and the science of sustainability — sharing, educating, and informing our local, regional, and global communities of our research to improve our world. “As I stand here with you today,” she said, “I can’t help but reflect on the impact that each of you will have on the world around us in these very same areas.”

The Best of the Best
During commencement, several students were cited for outstanding achievements. Advyth Ramachandran '23, a Biology degree candidate, was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award for exemplary work that encompassed academics as well as service and citizenship. Cheyenne Darrow and Joshua Wong were given the Rosemary S.J. Schraer Award which recognizes academic excellence in seniors and 15 CNAS graduates, selected by faculty, won Biochemistry Academic Excellence Awards.

Leonard Lloyd Padilla, valedictorian of the 2023 University Honors Graduating Class, gave the student commencement address in the morning session. Anviksha Srivastava, Biochemistry degree candidate, had the honor of giving the address in the afternoon. (See the accompanying story about these two outstanding CNAS students.)

Dean Uhrich remarked that each and every CNAS student graduating has had an impact on the college as a whole. “During your time at UCR, you were instrumental in helping the National Science Foundation rank us No. 3 in Hispanic STEM graduates in the nation,” she said. In addition, Dean Uhrich said that for the last four years, U.S. News & World Report ranked UCR as the No. 1 public university in the U.S. for social mobility.

“And just the other day, Chancellor Wilcox announced a major milestone,” she added. “UCR joins the very best of the best in higher education -- the Association of American Universities, or AAU. Know that you and your faculty played a significant role in UCR becoming an AAU institution.”

After conferring the degrees and the traditional Baccalaureate Tassel-Turning, conducted at the morning ceremony by Thaniya Shankar, a Biology (Law & Society minor) degree candidate and Syreze-Sky De Leon San Andres, a Neuroscience (Environmental Science minor) degree candidate in the afternoon, Tammy Le Van, a Neuroscience degree candidate, led the graduates in singing UCR’s Alma Mater at both sessions.

Dean Uhrich said that the work students do with faculty accounts for nearly 50% of all grants and contracts to UCR, a figure totaling nearly $100 million last year alone.

“What a historic moment for UCR and CNAS, and each of you are a huge part of that,” she said. “There is no question that you are leaving a legacy here. I can’t wait to see what’s ahead for all of you.”
Riverside, Ca

Nearly 6,000 students are eligible to graduate this year, with ceremonies running from May 31- June 17

The University of California, Riverside’s 65th commencement will celebrate 5,857 eligible graduates.

The nine ceremonies include 4,797 graduates with bachelor’s degrees; 691 with master’s degrees; 340 with doctorate degrees; and 32 with credentials. Commencement ceremonies are scheduled between May 31 and June 17.

As with every graduating class, UC Riverside takes pride in every student who leaves the campus ready to start a bright future, said Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox.

“We honor their hard work, commitment and many sacrifices ¬— from staying up late writing, researching or creating, to balancing jobs, family obligations, and personal lives,” Wilcox said. “It is an honor to be a part of this pivotal time in their lives, and a joy to see them fulfill their dreams.”

UC Riverside’s commitment to its students is both qualitative and quantitative. Most recently, the Forbes and U.S. News and World Report rankings have demonstrated that UCR is a university on the rise, impacting social mobility.

Each year, the campus welcomes close to 40,000 people who come to cheer on their graduates. This year, the School of Medicine and the Graduate Division hooding ceremonies will take place at the Student Recreation Center north. The remaining seven will be held on Pierce Lawn, east of the bell tower. See below for a complete list.

Guests attending the ceremonies must have a ticket and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For details, visit: commencement.ucr.edu. Guests who are sensitive to heat may view the graduation ceremonies in the University Lecture Hall or Watkins 1000. These lecture halls are climate controlled and will broadcast a live video feed of each ceremony on a large screen. No tickets are required for entrance into these locations.
