Survey of the rich heritage of Latin American classical\u00a0music from Renaissance sacred polyphony to contemporary\u00a0styles. Emphasis on the gradual emergence of Latin American\u00a0music from European domination and the establishment of\u00a0distinctive national traditions in the post-colonial era.\u00a0Cross-listed with LNST 016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUS 017. Music of Mexico (4)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Lecture,\u00a03 hours; extra reading, 2 hours; assigned listening, 1\u00a0hour. Prerequisite(s): musical training and knowledge\u00a0of Spanish is useful but not required. Surveys the rich\u00a0traditional and art music of Mexico from the early 1500s\u00a0to the present. Music of Spain (4)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Lecture, 3 hours; term paper, 1 hour; extra reading, 2 hours. Prerequisite(s): none. Survey of Spanish music from the Middle Ages to the present. Covers regional folklore and popular styles (especially flamenco) as well as developments in classical music through the major style periods. Examines music in its historical and cultural context. Knowledge of Spanish and music not required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUS 073A Dance of Mexico (2)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Studio, 3 hours;\u00a0extra reading, 1 hour; screening, 1 hour; individual studio, 1 hour. Prerequisite(s): none. Covers the traditional dances of Mexico at the beginning level. Includes attendance at dance concerts outside of class. Recommended for both nondancers and dancers. Introduces the music of Brazil, focusing\u00a0on the history and the current variety of musical languages,\u00a0styles, and forms of the present. Analyzes the crucial\u00a0question of national identity in Brazilian culture and\u00a0society through the study of its music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUS 115. Renaissance and Baroque Music of Latin<br \/>\nEurope and Latin America (4)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Lecture, 3 hours;\u00a0individual study, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): MUS 112A,<br \/>\nMUS 112B, MUS 112C; or upper-division standing and consent\u00a0of instructor. Study of the sacred and secular musics\u00a0of Italy, France, the Iberian Peninsula, and Latin America,\u00a01450-1750. Emphasis is on the repertoires, styles, and\u00a0genres that are relevant to understanding the musical\u00a0past of the Americas, from (Alta) California to South\u00a0America.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUS 122. Music and Performance in the Andes (4)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading, 2 hours; assigned listening,\u00a01 hour. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or consent\u00a0of instructor. Introduction to the musical practices of\u00a0the central Andean countries, including indigenous, mestizo,\u00a0Creole, and Afro-Andean traditions. Music is presented\u00a0as part of a broader realm of performance in the Andes,\u00a0incorporating dance, ritual, drama, and popular culture,\u00a0and its relationship with notions of identity, nationalism,\u00a0modernity, folklore, and politics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUS 125 Music of Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean (4)<\/strong>\u00a0Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading and listening to prepared tapes of music, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or consent of instructor. A survey of different musical traditions from Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, with an emphasis on popular music. Examines the impact of intercultural contact on the musical styles of these regions. A background in Western music is not required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUS 170. Rondalla Ensemble (1-2)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Studio,\u00a02-4 hours. Prerequisite(s): upper-division standing or\u00a0consent of instructor. Study and performance of the Filipino\u00a0rondalla, an ensemble consisting of various sizes of lute-like\u00a0and guitar-like instruments. Discussions focus on Filipino\u00a0culture. Normally graded Satisfactory (S) or No Credit\u00a0(NC), but students may petition the instructor for a letter\u00a0grade on the basis of assigned extra work or examination.\u00a0Course is repeatable.
