{"id":4093,"date":"2016-06-02T12:53:43","date_gmt":"2016-06-02T19:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arthistory.ucr.edu\/?p=4093"},"modified":"2019-09-06T12:54:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T19:54:07","slug":"jason-weems-awarded-fulbright-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arthistory.ucr.edu\/jason-weems-awarded-fulbright-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Jason Weems Awarded Fulbright Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Jason Weems Awarded Fulbright Fellowship<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"book-publisher\">UCR Anthropologist and Art Historian Awarded Fulbright Fellowships<\/span><span class=\"faculty-title\"><br \/>\n<\/span><em>Yolanda Moses will study new model of inclusiveness in Australia; Jason Weems will explore the intertwining of art and archaeology in the Americas<\/em><br \/>\n<span class=\"faculty-title\">UCR Today<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"faculty-title\">by <a title=\"View all posts by Bettye Miller\" href=\"https:\/\/ucrtoday.ucr.edu\/author\/bettyem\" rel=\"author\">Bettye Miller<\/a> on <em>June 2, 2016<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2532 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/arthistory.ucr.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/WeemsBig-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"WeemsBig\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arthistory.ucr.edu\/faculty\/jason-weems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Jason Weems<\/a>, associate professor of art history, will pursue research at the Instituto Franklin of the Universidad de Alcala in Madrid, Spain, to develop an intellectual and historical framework for understanding American art through the lens of the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>Weems, who joined the UC Riverside faculty in 2008, will spend the winter and spring quarters of 2016-17 conducting research and teaching at The University of Alcala\u2019s Franklin Institute in a project that he hopes will foster a more globalized approach to American art history both at home and abroad. Research conducted in colonial archives and at various art museums also will support a book-length project, \u201cInventing the Americas: Art, Archaeology and the Modern Making of a Pre-Columbian Past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile American art has traditionally been understood as the study of \u2018art of the United States,\u2019 recently efforts have begun to understand the deep entanglement of national art within a more expansive network of indigenous, cross-cultural and international exchange,\u201d he explained. \u201cOne result of this shift has been the expansion of American art to encompass the many places and peoples, across both the Western hemisphere and the globe, which played formative roles in the synthesis of American artistic and representational practices.
